Der Kritik-Begriff gehört zu den Schlüsselkonzepten der europäischen Aufklärung. Trotz seiner nachweisbaren Präsenz im spanischen Schrifttum des 18. Jahrhunderts ist eine eingehende Untersuchung seiner Entwicklung und der kultur- wie medienhistorischen Rahmenbedingungen bislang ausgeblieben. Dies mag damit zusammenhängen, dass man unter Verhältnissen des so genannten aufgeklärten Absolutismus der Bourbonen vor allem einer in gesellschaftlichen Sphären angewandten Kritik keinen sonderlich großen Entfaltungsspielraum zugetraut hat. Die Studie zeigt in der Leitformulierung der 'Sozialisation der Kritik' die Entwicklung eines spezifischen Unterscheidungs- und Urteilsvermögens, das den Weg von der gelehrten Literaturkritik eines Benito Jerónimo Feijoo oder Gregorio Mayans y Siscar zum kritischen Interventionsbewusstsein des öffentlichen Schriftstellers bei José Cadalso oder der Wochenschrift El Censor nimmt. Eine Untersuchung der Kritik in Spanien, vorgeblich im Land des rigiden Katholizismus und der 'unzureichenden Aufklärung' (Eduardo Subirats), kann daher ebenso aufschlussreich sein für die Erforschung anderer Kulturen und Nationen des 18. Jahrhunderts.
Der Band bietet anhand von 32 Beispielen erstmals ein in deutscher Sprache abgefasstes, umfangreiches Panorama der spanischen Malerei, das vom Siglo de Oro bis in die Gegenwart reicht.
Die Sammlung lädt ein zur vertiefenden Betrachtung von Meisterwerken weltweit berühmter Maler wie El Greco, Goya, Picasso, Miró oder Dalí. Sie ermöglicht zugleich die Entdeckung von im deutschsprachigen Raum weniger bekannten Künstlern wie Sánchez Cotán, Juan Pantoja, Rosario Weiss, José de Madrazo, Lluïsa Vidal, Isabel Quintanilla oder Miquel Barceló.
Die Beiträge, die von ausgewiesenen Spezialisten aus Deutschland, Österreich und Spanien verfasst wurden, liefern mit jeder Einzeldarstellung auch eine Einführung in das Werk der jeweiligen Künstler und eröffnen über Literaturhinweise die Möglichkeit einer weiteren Auseinandersetzung. Flankiert werden sie jeweils von einer farbigen Abbildung des besprochenen Werkes. Insgesamt richtet sich der Band an Kunstinteressierte, Dozenten und Studierende, die einen direkten Zugang zum thematischen und ästhetischen Reichtum der spanischen Malerei suchen.
