In this age of the new media, everyone with access to the Internet and knowledge can build their own website to market their services or products to the general public. One group of people who are harnessing the powers of the Internet is individual home-stays operators. Home-stays operators can advertise their services to the general public, either locally or internationally through the Internet. This paper explores the types of contents created by the Bidayuh people who are home-stays entrepreneurs at the Annah Rais longhouse located in the Padawan District, Sarawak. A search on the Internet indicates that three operators have their own websites to advertise their home-stays. To obtain information about the services and packages offered by these Bidayuh operators, the three home-stay websites were content analyzed. The analysis involves ranking these websites with a purposely created ranking instrument. Analysis of the data show that these home-stays operators obtained an above average score on all indicators. In other words, potential visitors will have sufficient knowledge about each home-stay if they were to surf the respective websites. Knowledge about the location, accommodation, types of packages and modes of reservation are offered to entice would be visitors to the Annah Rais longhouses.
The Bidayuh people are one of the indigenous communities who often get the highlight from tourists during their stay in Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak. Their performing arts notably, the dance and music are often commercialized and staged to tourists, who would visit the prominent Bidayuh longhouse in Annah Rais village, located at the Padawan District. This paper is based on empirical studies that explores and identifies the significance of homestay programme as one of the rural community-based tourism developments and the role of homestay proprietors to perpetuate and preserve the Bidayuh performing arts. The research findings are based on in-depth interview with the homestay proprietors as well local and foreign visitors and tourists during their visit or stay in the village. The twofold findings reveal that the interplay between homestay programme and proprietors are crucial in shaping tourist’s meaningful experiences which ultimately imperative in the planning and management of rural community-based tourism for sustainable development.Keywords: performing arts, community-based tourism, homestay, cultural heritage, Bidayuh
Setiap individu mempunyai identiti tersendiri sama ada di luar talian mahupun dalam talian. Identiti kendiri yang dikonstruksi memiliki keunikan serta perbezaan tersendiri yang membolehkan individu dikenali oleh orang lain. Walaupun terdapat banyak kajian yang mengkaji konstruksi identiti kendiri, khususnya dalam bidang komunikasi silang budaya tetapi faktor-faktor yang digunakan oleh individu dalam membentuk identiti dalam talian belum diterokai sepenuhnya. Kajian ini menyelidik bagaimana pemilik akaun Facebook menggunakan literasi media dalam mengkonstruksi identiti dalam talian. Objektif kajian ini adalah untuk menganalisis bagaimana pengetahuan, emosi dan kemahiran membantu individu mengkonstruksi identiti kendiri dalam talian. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah penyelidikan campuran untuk menyelidik bagaimana literasi media digunakan dalam mengkonstruksi identiti sebenar, unggul ataupun samaran dalam talian. Media sosial membolehkan individu mewujudkan identiti dalam talian untuk memaparkan identiti pilihan mereka. Individu bukan sekadar mengkonstruksi identiti di luar talian malah boleh mengkonstruk semula identiti secara dalam talian. Identiti dalam talian membenarkan individu berinteraksi dengan semua lapisan pengguna termasuk orang yang tidak dikenali. Walau bagaimanapun, kajian sebelum ini tidak mengkaji sumber peribadi yang perlu dimiliki oleh seseorang individu untuk membolehkannya mengkonstruk identiti dalam talian. Kajian lalu juga didapati kurang meneliti kepelbagaian identiti yang mungkin dikonstruksi dalam talian sama ada identiti unggul, sebenar ataupun identiti samaran. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis faktor pengetahuan yang mempengaruhi pengguna media sosial apabila mengkonstruksi identiti dalam talian. Pengguna aktif Facebook dalam kalangan 400 penuntut di empat buah institusi pengajian tinggi dipilih sebagai responden kajian ini. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara faktor pengetahuan yang dimiliki oleh pengguna Facebook dengan konstruksi identiti dalam talian sama ada identiti unggul, sebenar dan samaran. Aspek yang mendasari struktur pengetahuan telah dikenal pasti sebagai pengetahuan am, pengalaman, penapisan bahasa, pengetahuan memuat naik, penapisan komen dan penulisan status merupakan aspek penting yang diambil kira oleh responden apabila mengkonstruk identiti dalam talian. Interaksi sosial di Internet memberi ruang kepada individu mencipta sendiri dan memaparkan identiti mengikut acuan yang diinginkan dan dipaparkan kepada umum.
