Chapter II THE ORGANIZATION OF THE SCREENING COURSE 2. 1. General. In 1949 a four weeks' screening course at the Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, Virginia, was established by directive of the Commandant of the Marine Corps. The screening course was designed to identify from a group of enlisted men those most likely to function effectively as Marine Corps officers and to estimate their relative level of future effectiveness as officers. The course was directed toward the selection of potential general duty officers, and specialists were not to be given advantage in the course. Nor was the technical experience gained from infantry duty to be permitted to increase a candidate's likelihood of success. It was intended, rather, to evaluate only those aspects outlined by the Commandant, and to evaluate them apart from any other special skills that might have been acquired by the men. The Commandant had indicated that candidates should be observed under varying conditions to determine desirable officer qualities.*The psychiatrists assigned were Naval personnel who not only had had considerable experience with line personnel for which the screening was conducted, and, in addition, were highly qualified in their professional medical speciality. In addition to these qualifications, the psychiatrists were analytically oriented, many having completed psychoanalytic training. This latter qualification was important in view of the strong psychoanalytic structuring of all the medicopsychological procedures and instruments. The clinical psychologists were trained in projecttve techniques. '
