The chemical education conference, CECl78, held at Beaver College on August [21][22][23][24][25]1978, was modeled after and inspired by the Canadian chemical education conferences a t Waterlooin 1973Waterlooin ,1975Waterlooin and 1977. But CECi78 was unique in a number of significant ways. As Arthur Breyer, chairman of the chemistry and physics departments of Beaver College and ca-director of the conference, stated in his remarks during the opening general session, the major goalof CEC/78 was to "present aprogram of current ideas, methods and materials which teachers of the various sciences can find immediately useful in their Classroom". He stressed that the conference was not programmed solely for high school chemistry teachers but also far junior college, college, and university teachers and that the program included topics relevant to the other sciences at all levels. In fad, two of the five general sessions featured Jearl Walker, professor of physics at Cleveland State University. One of these was a multiple-~mage, multi-media show using ten projectors
Achievement associated with a school district committed to the implementation of the Intermediate Science Curriculum Study (ISCS) materials and instructional strategy is the focus of this report. While ISCS is a three level, activity oriented, junior high program, the research was limited to the first year or Level I. Data were gathered from Level I students (mostly seventh graders) during a five year period. Analyses were performed to help answer questions such as: Are IQ and reading scores the highest correlates of achievement? Do IQ and reading correlates hold for both quantitative and qualitative indices of achievement? Do ISCS learning relationships hold over time? Are students able to evaluate how well they understand the concepts covered?Science Education 66(1): 35-43 (1982)
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
