A high-resolution, multi-level, primitive equation ocean model has been used to investigate the combined role of seasonal wind forcing, seasonal thermohaline gradients, and coastline irregularities on the formation of currents, meanders, eddies, and filaments in the entire California Current System (CCS) region, from Baja to the Washington-Canada border. Additional objectives are to further characterize the meandering jet south of Cape Blanco and the seasonal variability off Baja. Model results show the following: All of the major currents of the CCS (i.e., the California Current, the California Undercurrent, the Davidson Current, the Southern California Countercurrent, and the Southern California Eddy) as well as filaments, meanders and eddies are generated. The results are consistent with the generation of eddies from instabilities of the southward current and northward undercurrent via barotropic and baroclinic instability processes. The meandering southward jet, which divides coastally-influenced water from water of offshore origin, is a continuous feature in the CCS, and covers an alongshore distance of over 2000 km from south of Cape Blanco to Baja. Off Baja, the southward jet strengthens (weakens) during spring and summer (fall and winter). The area off southern Baja is a highly dynamic environment for meanders, filaments, and eddies, while the region off Point Eugenia, which represents the largest coastline perturbation along the Baja peninsula, is shown to be a persistent cyclonic eddy generation region.
This article begins with a detailed structural analysis of ÒZajal 90Ó by the Andalus poet Ibn Quzm¨n (d. 555/1160). On the basis of this analysis, It is concluded that the poem employs irony to condemn the anti-Berber prejudice prevalent among native AndalusÂs in Almoravid-ruled twelfth-century al-Andalus. It is also pointed out that the poem shares a number of key features with the maq¨ma genre, and may, in fact, be viewed as a maq¨ma in verse. The article then ascribes the invention of the maq¨ma genre by al-Hamaä¨n (358/969-398/1008) in the East, as well as its cultivation by al-Saraqusß (d. 538/1143) in the West, to two separate but parallel crises in literary patronage that took place (1) when the Persian-speaking Buwayhids reduced the Arab ®Abb¨sid caliphs to puppets in Iraq (334/945), and (2) when the Berber-speaking Almoravids deposed the Arabicspeaking mulâk al-ßaw¨¾if (448/1056) in al-Andalus.The article concludes by drawing a parallel between the above crises in literary patronage, and the rise of the shadow play, as it was cultivated by Ibn D¨niy¨l (d. 710/1310), in late thirteenth-century Egypt, under the r gime of the Mamlâk Sultan Baybars I (r. 658/1260-676/1277). Finally, the article attempts to illustrate how certain crises in literary patronage -resulting in the abandonme nt of the courtly, panegyrical qa×Âda-often led to extremely creative attempts at incorporating popular genres into the canon of formal Arabic literature. Introductory RemarksAbâ Bakr Mu½ammad ibn Quzm¨n (d. 555/1160) is the earliest cultivator of the Andalus zajal whose dÂw¨n has survived-and almost in its entirety. As a result, he has attracted a good deal of scholarly attention in modern times. Although relatively little is known about this great poetÕs life, his contribution to Arabic literature clearly documents a sharp break with the classical tradition. During the Almoravid age, in which he ourished, and in which courtly, literary patronage dried up in al-Andalus, Ibn Quzm¨n adapted the colloquial language and strophic structure of the popular zajal to the formal requirements of literary expression.
