O termo osteointegração refere-se à ancoragem de um implante no tecido ósseo, de forma que esse implante possa suportar carga funcional, tanto na mastigação, deglutição, fala. O processo de osteointegração envolve vários mecanismos biológicos e o entendimento desses mecanismos e do papel da superfície dos implantes nesse processo, auxiliará o cirurgião dentista tanto na escolha dos implantes mais apropriados para os seus pacientes como no reconhecimento de problemas que possam surgir após a colocação de um implante. Através desse trabalho poderemos compreender como ocorre a osteointegração do implante ao osso. Porém, quando implantes são instalados imediatamente após a exodontia pode ocorrer ancoragem primária diminuída, atraso ou deficiência na evolução do processo de osteointegração. Isto ocorre em razão da ampla interface paredes circundantes do alvéolo/superfície do implante. A ancoragem nestas situações pode ser obtida por meio de enxerto ósseo, podendo ser autógeno, removidos do próprio paciente; alógenos, que são enxertos doados por uma outra pessoa ou xenógenos, são enxertos vindos de outra espécie que chamamos também de biomateriais. Logo, esse trabalho mostra, numa revisão de literatura, princípios de osteointegração e regeneração óssea guiada com uso de biomateriais e de membranas.
