-The effect of the application of silicon to corn plants on the development of the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) was evaluated. Silicon treatment consisted in applying 3.2 ml of a sodium silicate solution [25-28% (w/v) SiO 2 ] plus 96.8 ml of water into the soil at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 days after emergence of corn plants kept in pots. Another group of plants were grown free of silicon. Larvae were fed on leaves obtained from silicon treated plants and their mortality at the end of the 2 nd larval instar, length of the larval and pupal period, and pupal weight were compared to those of larvae fed on normal leaves. No effect of silicon was observed on the length of larval and pupal phase, pupal weight and mortality of pupae. However, increased mortality and cannibalism were registered in groups of fall armyworm at the end of the 2 nd instar and greater mortality of the larvae was seen at the 2 nd and 6 th instars fed on silicon-treated corn plant leaves in comparison with the control. The jaws mandibles of fall armyworm at the 6 th instar showed marked wear on the incisor region when in contact with leaves with higher silicon content. Silicon application can make fall armyworm feeding difficult, causing higher mortality and cannibalism, thus increasing plant resistance to this species.KEY WORDS: Insecta, Zea mays, resistance, Integrate Pest Management.RESUMO -Este trabalho, objetivou avaliar o efeito da aplicação de silício em plantas de milho no desenvolvimento da lagarta-do-cartucho Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). The pest greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) stands out among the factors limiting Brazilian wheat production. Chemical control is predominant in aphid management making the production dependent on insecticides. The effect of silicon and previous infestation with aphids on the induction of resistance to the greenbug was evaluated in wheat plants. Treatments consisted of control; fertilization with calcium silicate; plant infestation with aphids; fertilization with calcium silicate + plant infestation with aphids. A free-choice preference test was performed 35 days after seedling emergence; the aphid's intrinsic rate of population increase (r m ) was also determined, and the activities of three enzymes (peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase) involved in plant defense were quantified. Silicon fertilization and the previous infestation with aphids induced wheat plant resistance to the greenbug. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Insecta, resistência, biologia, EPGABSTRACT -The effect of silicon-treated wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) on the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) was evaluated. Plants were treated with silicon incorporated to the soil and by foliar spraying. Aphid development was evaluated by observing the duration of the pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive periods, as well as fecundity and longevity. Probing behaviour was investigated by using the DC electrical penetration graphs (EPG) technique and a "honeydew clock". Silica treated plants had a clear adverse effect on aphid development. Stylet penetration was not affected by treatments showing no physical barriers by the plant tissue. However, stylet was withdrawn more often on plants treated with silica, resulting in reduction of probing time. Sieve elements were reached equally by aphids in all treatments and the insects remained ingesting phloem sap for similar periods. However, honeydew excretion was highly reduced indicating lower sap ingestion rate or higher sap retention inside the body. Chemical changes and induced resistance are possibly related to the reduction of aphid performance.
We studied the tritrophic interaction: wheat, greenbug Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) and its key natural enemies, Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) and Aphidius colemani Viereck, in plants with or without silicon fertilization. Treatments consisted of: 1) silicon application via the leaves; 2) silicon application in the soil 3) control (no application). The evaluations consisted of: a) free-choice aphid preference test in the laboratory, from the 35 th day after plant emergence, and b) biological aspects of the immature stages of predator C. externa, feeding on aphids reared on plants from the different treatments. Two treatments were tried in the bioassays involving A. colemani: 1) silicon application in the soil, and 2) control (no application). The biological traits evaluated were: duration of the immature stage, longevity, sex ratio, total developmental time, and percentage parasitism. Silicon application increased the degree of resistance in wheat plants, decreasing greenbug preference in relation to the control. This result could be related to the mechanical barrier provided by silica deposition in the cell wall, which would make it difficult for the stylet to penetrate the plant tissue, as well as an increase in the synthesis of plant defense compounds.
