Les XIIIe et XIVe siècles voient fleurir en Italie centrale une sainteté féminine d'ermites et de recluses. Jeanne, aux portes de Signa, petite bourgade du «contado» florentin, mena une vie discrète et obscure mais attira pourtant, après sa mort, un culte vigoureux : confrérie, chapelle, fresques... Ses miracles post mortem survenus entre 1348 et 1383 forment l'essentiel de sa légende. Ils permettent de saisir ce que son culte a de modeste et d'archaïque : petit rayonnement sur les environs immédiats de Signa, classiques guérisons accompagnées d'une démarche au tombeau. Le dossier n'en témoigne pas moins de discrètes conquêtes : affirmation d'une sainteté locale, laïque, féminine. Le culte de Jeanne de Signa permet surtout de percevoir, à l'échelle d'une petite bourgade toscane, le rôle considérable des assauts de la peste dans la deuxième moitié du XIVe siècle. C'est au fléau et à quelques familles relais que Jeanne doit son succès; un succès qui se nourrit plus de désarroi que d'ambition.
Certains points d'histoire apparaissent plus comme des enjeux que comme de véritables objets d'étude. Chaque génération, chaque école viennent y prendre ce qu'elles cherchent sans trop regarder ce qui s'y présente et les discours historiens recouvrent peu à peu de leurs strates les sources historiques. Tel est le sort de la vie de Robert d'Arbrissel.D'abord objet d'un long conflit entre apologistes et détracteurs, le fondateur de l'ordre double de Fontevraud ne trouva pas le repos au regard de l'Histoire. Plus souvent utilisé qu'étudié, il dut se prêter à deux grandes thèses.Pour les uns, Robert est le dfenseur des humbles contre les grands, sa prdication tapageuse est l'expression immature des aspirations populaires et sa vie est un dfi l'ordre social.
François et Claire n'ont nullement constitué un couple symétrique. Le Poverello n'a jamais formulé un projet spécifique pour les moniales de Saint-Damien. En fidélité à l'Evangile, il cherche un projet destiné à l'humanité dans son ensemble. Sa culture courtoise le pousse en revanche à s'adresser à des allégories féminines (Marie, l'Église, la Pauvreté, la Terre) qui résument l'essentiel de ses valeurs de prédilection ; et s'il lui arrive de « faire la femme », c'est pour indiquer quel doit être un gouvernement qui se situe aux antipodes du pouvoir. Claire, de son côté, ne se réfère pas de manière intempestive à François, mais uniquement lorsque l'essence de ses choix religieux est remise en cause par la papauté. Pour le reste, toute relation passe par son rapport au Christ. Pour François, il n'y a que des êtres humains, classés dans des catégories sexuelles, sociales, culturelles qu'il s'agit de subvenir. Pour Claire, il n'y a que des Christs, tous uns et tous uniques.
