L'article est conçu comme une contribution à la construction d'une géographie sociale scientifique — une géographie marxiste (potentielle) — au moyen d'une critique des conceptions de Paul Claval concernant le marxisme et l'espace, dans ses articles parus dans cette revue. La conception clavalienne de l'espace (comme objet de la géographie sociale) est inadéquate, car empiri- ciste; cette conception est futile et sans signification, du point de vue théorique, et ne peut aboutir qu'à des explications ad hoc. Nous situons historiquement et théoriquement ses conceptions « spatialistes ». Face à cette conception s'élabore une notion d'espace qui est spécifique à, et théoriquement adéquate pour, la science géographique. Ensuite, on vide la critique clavalienne de la méthode de Marx en démontrant que cette critique n'est pas valable parce que Claval critique un Marx althussérien. Vis-à-vis de ce Marx althussérien-clavalien se présente un Marx «réaliste»; et nous présentons une interprétation différente de l'évolution dans la pensée de Marx. La pertinence de celle-ci pour la géographie sociale est indiquée.
Cet article présente l'élaboration d'une typologie économique des systèmes d'exploitation, à l'échelle de la France, d'après la typologie de l'agriculture polonaise réalisée par M. le Professeur Kostrowicki. Il n'est tenu compte que des éléments du système d'exploitation, et au niveau des groupes de régions agricoles. Le typogramme est partagé en quadrants : utilisation du sol, caractères techniques, production animale, et résultats économiques. Sa composition fait que l'étendue du typogramme correspond à la recherche d'efficacité du système d'exploitation. Le centre du cercle est le point zéro des valeurs, dont l'échelle est arithmétique. Le tri des typogrammes est effectué en trois étapes : classement selon la production finale — par exploitation, par homme, et par hectare ; puis selon l'intensivité ; et enfin selon les systèmes de production. Chaque région est alors représentée par quatre chiffres — production et intensivité — et par deux lettres — système de production. Le premier tri, selon la production, a permis de distinguer en France dix catégories. Le second tri, selon la production et l'intensivité, seize catégories. Le troisième tri n'était pas terminé lors de la rédaction de l'article. Cette typologie, par une confrontation facile des régions, permet d'établir une cartographie intéressante.
