Low thresholds (∼500 W/cm2) for amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) are reported in films of soluble poly(paraphenylene vinylene)-based conjugated polymer blends. Efficient Förster energy transfer from the absorbing host polymer to the emitting guest polymer is observed. Emission in the blends originates predominantly from the guest polymer. The large spectral shift between the absorption and emission wavelengths lowers the self-absorption losses and results in low ASE thresholds. Initial results show an enhancement in photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the blends.
Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in psoriatic skin lesions seems to be related to the severity of the psoriasis, and the electrical capacitance and conductance of the skin are indicators of the hydration level of the stratum corneum. We compared the characteristics of these electrical measurements, in assessing the persistent effect of a moisturizing cream on skin hydration and barrier function in psoriasis patients. Seventeen Korean psoriasis patients were recruited. Their right leg was treated with the moisturizer twice daily for 6 weeks, while their left leg was used as the control site. For each patient, one psoriatic plaque on each leg was selected as the involved psoriatic lesion. Uninvolved psoriatic skin was regarded as the apparently healthy looking skin 4-5 cm away from the periphery of the psoriatic lesion. The TEWL, electrical capacitance and conductance were measured, in order to evaluate the barrier function and hydration level of the stratum corneum. The clinical and biophysical data for each patient were recorded at the start of the study and after 2, 4 and 6 weeks. The degree of skin dryness at the applied area improved progressively. The electrical capacitance at the treated psoriatic lesion increased significantly after 2 weeks, and this improvement was maintained during the entire study period. However, no noticeable change was observed in the electrical conductance. The TEWL showed an inverse pattern to that of the skin capacitance, decreasing during the study period. The skin capacitance and TEWL exhibited good correlation with the visual assessment of skin dryness, but the skin conductance did not. Our data suggest that electrical capacitance and TEWL may be useful in the evaluation of the effect of a moisturizer on the hydration status and barrier function of psoriatic skin.
The role of hydrogen in the growth of Ge on a Si͑001͒-͑2 3 1͒ surface was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and medium energy ion scattering spectroscopy. The adsorbed hydrogen was found to (i) increase the number of equilibrium adsorption sites, (ii) lift the diffusion anisotropy, and (iii) lower the diffusivity for Ge adatom, as suggested by the recent first principle calculation. With a dynamically supplied atomic hydrogen flux of ϳ2 monolayers͞s, we achieved layer-by-layer growth by preventing growth of the hut cluster beyond the known critical thickness. The 10.0 monolayer Ge layers grown with hydrogen surfactant are strained, while those without it are relaxed.[S0031-9007(98)06222-X]
Carcinoma of the cervix is a common neoplasm. Early detection and improved treatment techniques have resulted in better control of cancer and longer survival, however, invasive and metastatic disease still occur. Cervical cancer usually spreads through direct local extension and via the lymphatics, haematogenous metastasis is relatively infrequent and cutaneous metastases are very rare. Metastasis to the scalp is extremely rare and only three cases of scalp metastasis from cervical cancer have been reported in the literature. We now report a patient with cervical cancer who presented with metastasis to this very unusual site.
This study was performed in order to evaluate the association of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) gene polymorphisms with renal allograft rejection in Koreans. Five TNF-alpha (-1031T/C, -863C/A, -857C/T, -308G/A and -238G/A) and two TGF-beta1 (codon 10 T/C and codon 25 G/C) single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites were studied by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) single-strand conformation polymorphism and PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism methods in 100 controls and 164 patients. The patients underwent renal transplantation, having one or more Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A, HLA-B and HLA-DR antigens mismatched with their donors. For the TGF-beta1 gene, we also studied the polymorphism of donors. The allele frequencies of each SNP site in controls were not different from those of patients. The frequency of TNF-alpha high-producer genotype, -308GA, and TGF-beta1 lower (intermediate)-producer genotype, codon 10 CC and codon 25 GG, were significantly higher in patients with recurrent acute rejection episodes (REs), compared to those in patients with no or one RE. The highest risk group for developing recurrent REs showed the combination of TNF-alpha high- and TGF-beta1 lower-producer genotypes. Analysis of chronic renal allograft dysfunction (CRAD) revealed that TGF-beta1 high-producer genotype of donors, codon 10 TT/TC and codon 25 GG, is associated with CRAD especially in patients with recurrent REs. The highest risk group for developing CRAD showed the combination of recipient's TNF-alpha high- and donor's TGF-beta1 high-producer genotypes. These results would be useful for predicting high-risk group for acute rejection or CRAD in renal transplantation.
