The effect of the alloying constituents nickel and chromium on the corrosion behaviour of high alloy-steel in gas liquids is studied. Nickel has some disadvantageous effects on the corrosion resistance of the steels, while high contents of chromium make it possible, that there is a free corrosion potential in the passive region by shifting t h e passivation potential into negative direcrion. Furthermore, an activation is more difficult respectively not possible in solutions with low concentrations of the gas components.Cyanide causes an inhibition of electrochemical reactions at steels having a high chromium content in solutions with low HzS-concentrations and it improves their passivity even in solutions with high HzS-concentrations.Polysulfide fastens the passivation of the steels only in solutions with a high HzS-concentration, but it may have disadvantageous effects concerning their passivation by stabilizing active corrosion in solutions with low H2S-concentrations.
The effect of chlorine on the corrosion behaviour of different high-alloy stainless cast steels in seawater was studied. The investigations show that chlorine acting as a strong oxidizing agent is shifting the redox potential to very positive values. Because of the corrosion potential of the materials being influenced in the same way, the pitting potential of steels having a low pitting resistance equivalent may be exceeded. But first of all only the local inhomogeneities of the cast materials are attacked by pitting corrosion, which may stop after a while if the chlorine concentration is very low. Increasing chlorine contents make a repassivation of these spots more difficult or even prevent it, so these pits may be the starting points for stabile corrosion. This effect is intensified in flowing solutions by the higher cathodic diffusion current of chlorine reduction.
