This paper describes a new instrument for measuring the coefficient of friction of yarn running against a fixed surface. It is a direct-reading instrument in which the fixed object under test need not be of a closely specified form and can be easily changed without the necessity for accurate positioning. The conditions of test, such as initial tension, speed and temperature of the fixed surface can be readily varied. Details of calibration and performance are given together with illustrative results which show that the coefficient of friction is not a yarn constant, but depends on the material of the fixed friction surface and the conditions of test.
