El avance de la neuropsicología y el de la lingüística y su mutua aproximación, y aún compenetración, en vistas a una mejor comprensión dei lenguaje normal y, por lo que a nosotros nos interesa, dei lenguaje patológico (la afasiología actual) ha dado lugar a una nueva rama de la ciência, la neuropsicolingüística (Whittaker, Luria, Gainotti), que puede ser definida como el estúdio de los trastornos dei lenguaje debidos a lesiones cerebrales teniendo a la vez en cuenta los métodos y modelos de la psicolingüística y Ias características de aquellas lesiones. De modo tal que la afasiología ha accedido a un nuevo estádio o nivel.La lingüística estudia el lenguaje humano en general. La aproximación neuropsicolingüística la realizamos en al seno de Ia lengua concreta (F. de Saussure), con su literatura, su historia y su conexión socio-cultural y, por ello, va ligada al terreno de la filologia.Si damos un paso más y vamos de una lengua concreta al habla de un sujeto concreto (F. de Saussure) entramos en el idiolecto (entendido como la totalidad de los hábitos lingüísticos de un indivíduo particular en un tiempo dado) que será un idiolecto morboso si se trata de un enfermo afásico. Dicho fenômeno individual, que es el idiolecto, podríamos decir que se integra "estructuralmente" (trasladando aqui la momenclatura de X. Zubiri) con el concepto de metaestructura cerebral (Barbizet), que es el sostén dei conjunto de experiências y otras vivências dei sujeto, retenidas desde la infância, que guardan relación con tal fenômeno idiolectal. Destacamos este hecho, para subrayar Ias diferencias que, dentro de los limites que correspondan, puedan hallar-se en los distintos indivíduos: afectos de lesiones sucedidas en la infância, bilingüísmo, poliglotismo, características prosódico-melódicas dei lenguaje, nivel de escolarizacíón.El lenguaje, forma o conducta de la función simbólica (Piaget), hace uso de un elemento fundamental: el signo lingüístico
