The theological distinctness of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk: Questions and nuances A survey of past attempts to formulate the theological distinctness of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika, with special attention to a change of mode in the face of ecumenical developments since the 1960’s. It is shown that there are several streams of theological thought, exemplified by the published work of different theologians. The author’s own position is that the reformed heritage compels us to be critical of church thinking and practice: Scripture keeps calling us away from all egotism, all systematism, all overemphasis on creed, all undisciplined acts in life.
The Voortrekker ideal - Natal or Transvaal? On the basis of several documents from prominent Voortrekker leaders their ideal is summarised as follows: They were seeking for a space in which they could enjoy responsible freedom together with a means of living, an d could sustain their freed om by self government, good relations with other peoples and defence of person, land and property. From the inception of the idea of emigration the ultimate distination was seen differently by leaders, but eventually it was the Transvaal which provided the first real fulfillment of the ideal in the form of independence acknowledge by Great Britain.
