As estratégias de coordenação e crescimento das empresas, como a integração vertical, a desverticalização e a diversificação de produtos e mercados, vêm recebendo destacada atenção pelas suas influências no delineamento da estratégia competitiva. Nesse nível de estratégia reside a complexa decisão das empresas em integrar-se verticalmente, desverticalizar ou diferenciar produtos e mercados. Nesse sentido, o objetivo do presente artigo é analisar as razões da opção pela estratégia da integração vertical e a diversificação de produtos e mercados da holding Bertin S/A. A pesquisa pode ser caracterizada como um estudo de caso exploratório e descritivo. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de entrevistas em profundidade com os gestores do holding e a análise dos resultados baseou-se no procedimento analítico geral. Os principais resultados revelam que as estratégias adotadas pela empresa permitiram um crescimento em todas as suas divisões de negócios, especialmente para atender o mercado externo. O aumento dos produtos intermediários produzidos pela empresa traz grandes vantagens, como o aumento do poder de negociação, redução de custos de suprimentos, determinação de preços e maior eficiência para enfrentar clientes e concorrentes.
