Palavras-chaves -Regeneração Natural, Ecossistema de Caatinga, Perturbação Antrópica.ABSTRACT -(Natural regeneration in a Caatinga fragment under different disturbance levels) This work was carried out on the border between the municipalities of Areia and Remígio, in the state of Paraíba, where some remnants of hypoxerophytic caatinga were encountered. The objective was to observe modes of natural regeneration in areas with different levels of anthropogenic disturbance. Three areas (I, II, III) with decreasing levels of disturbance were chosen. Five sample units from each area were chosen for plotting. Four size classes were established in order to stratify the specimens under study: class 1 -specimens ranging from 0.10 to 0.29 m in height; class 2 -specimens ranging from 0.30 to 1.49 m in height; class 3 -specimens ranging from 1.

An evaluation of augmentative releases carried out at the Agreste site of the state of Paraiba, Brazil, provided significant insight into the ecology and potential impact of Catolaccus grandis (Burks) against the boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis Boheman in that cotton agroecosystem. The rate of increase in density of C. grandis was higher than the boll weevil. Catolaccus grandis showed ability to effectively search and reproduce within the release environment and revealed pronounced host and habitat preferences. Parasitism by C. grandis was largely confined to third instar weevil larvae, the majority of which (86.9%) occurred in abcised cotton squares. Catolaccus grandis inflicted significant mortality on third instar weevil larvae in the plot resulting in a significant level of suppression. The net effect was a higher boll weevil mortality in the release plot in comparison with the control. The use of augmentative releases of C. grandis has a very high potential for supplementing and enhancing available technology for suppressing boll weevil populations in the Agreste Paraiba.
In this work, 246 Bacillus sphaericus strains were evaluated against Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae to select the most effective ones to be used as the basis of a national product. All strains were isolated from different regions of Brazil and they are stored in a Bacillus spp. collection at Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology. The selected strains were characterized by biochemical and molecular methods. Based on selective bioassays, 87 strains were identified as toxic to one or both target species. All of these strains contain genes that encode the 42, 51 kDa proteins that constitute the binary toxin and the 100 kDa Mtx1 toxin. All toxic strains presented a very high LC 50 against A. aegypti, so, a product based on any of these B. sphaericus strains would not be recommended for use in programmes to control A. aegypti. S201 had highest activity against C. quinquefasciatus, presenting the lowest LC 50 and LC 90 in bioassays.

P.WATER CONSUMPTION AND CROP COEFFICIENT OF CASTOR BEAN CROP, CV. BRS ENERGIA 2 ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine water requirement of castor bean under irrigation. Field experiments were conducted at the Experimental Station of Cotton Embrapa in Barbalha city, Ceará State, Brazil in 2005 and 2006. With early maturity and low height, cv. BRS Energia was used, 107-day cycle, consisting of five phenological phases: I- germination up to 10% soil covering; II- up to inflorescence of the first bunch; III- up to inflorescence of the second bunch; IV- up to maturation of the first bunch; V- up to maturation of the second bunch, in 1 hectare area. The estimate of crop evapotranspiration for the phenological phases throughout the crop cycle was obtained by the Bowen-ratio energy balance. Crop coefficient (Kc) was obtained by the ratio between crop evapotranspiration (Etc) and reference evapotranspiration (ETo), estimated by the FAO-Penmam-Monteith method. The mean evapotranspiration for the 2 year-cultivation period was 565.1 mm, being 47.4 mm minimum consumption in phase 1 and 212.3 mm maximum consumption in phase IV. Mean values of Kc by phenological phase were 0.74; 0.93; 1.00; 1.18 and 0.92. Kc was defined as a function of days after emergence (DAE) by the equation Kc = -0.0001DAE2 + 0.016DAE + 0.556. Keywords: Ricinus communis, evapotranspiration, Bowen ratio.
