SUMMARY QUALITATIVE REQUIREMENTS OF TWO BIOTYPES OF THE PEA APHID, ACYRTHOSIPHON PISUM, FOR WATER‐SOLUBLE VITAMINS The nutritional requirements of two biotypes of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), for ten water‐soluble vitamins were evaluated by single omissions from a chemically defined diet. A highly significant decrease in growth, reproduction, and/or survival were observed in the absence of ascorbic acid, folic acid, niacin, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine and thiamin; these are considered essential in the diet of the pea aphid reared for two consecutive generations. Choline and inositol were also beneficial for growth, reproduction and survival, but the differences were not significant, whereas biotin and p‐aminobenzoic acid had no appreciable effect. The presence of dietary ascorbic acid increased the rate of feeding, but that of inositol or p‐aminobenzoic acid had no effect. Finally, growth, survival and reproduction of biotype Ile‐aux‐Coudres on the control diet was consistently less than that of biotype Saint‐Jean. This difference presumably results from the diverse genetic make‐up which favors a better development of biotype Saint‐Jean, the latter having a greater affinity for the synthetic diet.
Can. J. Zool. 59: 164-169. Can. J. Zool. 59: 164-169. The effects of different concentrations of riboflavin and that of total water-soluble vitamins in the nutrition of biotypes Saint-Jean and Ile-aux-Coudres of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphonpisum (Harris), were determined with chemically defined diets. Omission of riboflavin in the diet resulted in a significant increase in growth, reproduction, survival and ingestion rates of the two biotypes. Aphid performance was progressively and significantly improved when the total concentration of 10 vitamins, in the absence of riboflavin, was increased from 0 to 115.6 and 23 1.1 mgllOO mL of diet; the aphids performed poorly when such increases were accompanied by an increase in riboflavin. Finally, a doubling in the total concentration of the 10 other dietary vitamins (i.e. to 462.2 mgI100 mL), in the absence of riboflavin, resulted in a slightly lowered performance by aphids, whereas, in the presence of riboflavin, aphid performance was significantly reduced. These results indicate that a substantial decrease in dietary riboflavin, or even its omission, and keeping the overall content of the 10 other vitamins to 231.1 mgl100 mL significantly improved the rearingof the two biotypes on such diets over at least two or three successive generations.
