The influence of torsion and stiess on the structural elements of Bobshaw and Deltapine cotton was investigated. Slip phenomena between growth layers were noted; in particular, that between the winding layer and the outer secondary growth layers seems to be important. Changes in the fiber due to torsion and longitudmal stress are discussed. Treatment of the fibers with dimethylol ethylene urea or melamme formaldehyde was found to have a distinet influence on the torsion behavfor of the fiber. The usefulness of special optical techniques. particularly near-dark field, fluorescence dichroism, and ton etelung is discussed. The ton etching method can be successfully used to locate resmior cross-links in the cotton fiber.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
