Deoxygenation is an extensively studied field in organic chemistry, and over the last decades many methods such as the Barton–McCombie deoxygenation reaction or deoxygenation with alkali metals in liquid ammonia have been established. Within this microreview, we discuss different strategies for the chemoselective catalytic deoxygenation of alcohols with special attention to their scope and limitations. The deoxygenation of derivatives of alcohols and their direct deoxygenation as step‐economic alternative are covered with current examples. Catalytic methods can serve as convenient and economic alternatives for established methods in the reduction of carbon–oxygen single bonds.
SummaryThe synthetic protocol for the reduction of alcohols to hydrocarbons by using hydriodic acid, first described by Kiliani more than 140 years ago, was improved to be more applicable to organic synthesis. Instead of a strongly acidic, aqueous solution, a biphasic toluene–water reaction medium was used, which allowed the conversion of primary, secondary and tertiary benzylic alcohols, in good yields and short reaction times, into the corresponding hydrocarbons. Red phosphorous was used as the stoichiometric reducing agent. Keto, ester, amide or ether groups are tolerated, and catalytic amounts of hydriodic acid (0.2 equiv) in the presence of 0.6 equiv phosphorous are sufficient to achieve conversion.

Extracts of Ruscus aculeatus L., known as butcher's broom, are mainly used for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). In a recent study on the phenolic compounds of Rusci rhizoma, new phenyl‐1‐benzoxepinols were isolated. As the therapeutic effect of butcher's broom is ascribed to the pharmacological activity of the main constituents, steroidal saponins and their aglycones the ruscogenins, the role of the newly identified compounds was of interest. Owing to the low availability of the compounds by isolation, we synthesized them for pharmacological testing. In an ORAC–fluorescein assay they revealed a significant antioxidative activity, which may contribute to the anti‐inflammatory properties of the phenolic fraction obtained from Rusci rhizoma extracts.
Summary. A new sandwich antigen enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of Aspergillus galactomannan in blood plasma was compared with the latex‐agglutination test by investigation of six patients with histologically proven invasive aspergillosis. The ELISA gave positive results in all six patients while the latex test recognized 5/6 as positive. On an average the antigen ELISA gave positive results 19 days earlier than the latex test.
According to studies on an orange concentrate diluted back with distilled water to the desired extract content, the formation of furfural follows the pattern of a consequent reaction. After the induction period, the reaction curve takes a linear course cooresponding to a reaction of a zero order. The temperature dependence of the resultant reaction constant k obeys the ARRHENIUS equation and yields the same energy of activation for all the extract contents under investigation. This is a case of specific acid catalysis, because the reaction velocity is directly proportional to the hydronium ion activity. On a semilogarithmic scale, the dependence of the k values of the extract contents of the concentrates and of the re-constituted juice can be presented for various temperatures in the form of parallels. According to the literature, the amount of the furfural produced correlates with the quality of the orange juices and concentrates. Consequently, this amount might be used as an indicator in evaluating quality deteriorations due to unsuitable manufacturing and storage on the one hand, and for the computation and optimization of the manufacturing processes and parameters on the other hand.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
