a d a m e r . Die ersten Beobachtungen, welche einen tieferen Einblick in die Natur des von R o b i g u e t 1810 aus den spanischen Fliegen abgetrennten Katharidins brachten, stammen von J. P i c c a r dl).Er verdoppelte auf Grund von Dampfdichtebestimmungen die bis dahin angeiiommene Formel C,H,O, zu der richtigen Formel C,,H,,O, und zeigte, dn13 das Kantharidin durch Erhitzen rnit konzentrierter Jodwasserstoffsaure in eine mit ihm isomere einbasische Saure, die Kantharsiiure, verwandelt werden kann. Diese ist eine sehr starke Sbure, wahrend ,,Kantharidin sich in Alkalien nur mit ausgesprochener Tragheit auflost und durch die schwiichsten Sauren daraus abgeschieden wird". Beim Erhitzen der Kantharsaure im siedenden Schwefelbade (444,6O C.) fiir sich, als Baryumsalz oder am besten mit uberschiissigem Aetzkalk erhielt er neben Xylol und sauerstoffhaltigen, vemutlich ketonartigen Korpern einen Kohlenwasserstoff von der Formel C8Hl2, den er Kantharen nannte, und geringe Mengen von Sauren; a u h r einer intensiv nach Buttersiiure riechenden flussigen, eine mit Wasserdiimpfen ebenfalls fliichtige, feste Saure, die er durch Umlosen auf den Schmelzpunkt 140, bringen konnte. Auf Grund der Analyse des Silbersalzes faI3te er diese Saure als eine Xylylsiiure auf. Wegen der Bildung des Kantharens nach der Bruttogleichung C,,H,,O, = C,,H,, + 2 CO, und der gleichzeitigen Bildung eines Xylols brachte P i c c a r d fiir die Kantharsaure die Formel I und fur Kantharen $e Formel I1 in Vorschlag. Krtntharen ware danach ein Dihydrodimethylbenzol. In der letzten seiner angefiihrten Abhandlungen erbringt 1 ' i c c a r d den Beweis, daf3 dns Kantharen entgegen seiner ersten Auffassung nicht der p-Reihe, sondern cler o-Reihe angehort, da es bei der Oxydation je nach den Verhaltnissen o-Toluylsiiure oder Phtalsaure liefert. Er beweist ferner, da13 auch Kantharidin selbst der o-Reihe angehoren muI3, da es beim Erhitzen mit Phosphorpcntasulfid reines Orthoxylol gibt Von ganz besondereru lnteresse ist die von P i c c a r d beobachtete, von den spateren Bearbeitern leider zu wenig gewiirdigte Tatsache, da13 bei der Umwandlung des Kantharidins in Kantharsiiure durch Erhitzen mit konzentrierter Jodwasserstoffsaure ein ,,jodhaltiges Zwischenprodukt, ahnlich dem bekannten Beispiele der Aethylschwefelsaure bei der Aetherifikation des Alkohols" cntsteht. Diese bei 131 O schmelzende Verbindung hat die Zusammensetzung C,,H,,J,O,. Sie kann also vom Kantharidin in der Weiee abgeleitet werden, daf3 ein zweiwertiges Sauerstoffatom durch zwei einwertige Jodatome ersetzt ist. Ueber die Beziehungen zu nnderen Korpern, die sich vom Kantharidin ableiten, hat P i c c a r d nichts ermitteln konnen. Als besonders charakteristische Eigenschaft tlieser Verbinding hebt P i c c a r d hervor, da13 sie in kalter otler maRig erwarmter Kalilauge unloslich sei und erst beim ailhaltenden Kochen mit konzentrierter Kalilauge unter Bildung von Kaliumkarbonat und Kantharen angegriffen werde. A 11 g e m e i n e r T e i 1. Im Verlaufe seiner Untersuchungen iiber die Konstitution des Chelidonins ubertrug mir mein hochverehrter Lehrer, Herr Geheims rat J. G a d a m e r , die Aufgabe, an Hand der Eigenschaften des Bromchelidonins zu priifen, inwieweit die bisher fur die Konstitution des Chelidonins aufgestellten Formeln mit dem Verhalten des Broms clielidonins in Einklang zu bringen seien. Weiterhin waren die Be5 ziehungen der durch Oxydation mittels Mercuriacetates aus dem Chelidonin kiinstlich entstandenen Base, von der G a d a m e r and nimmt, dalS sie moglichcrweisc, ja sogar wahrscheinlich mit dem Sanguinarin identisch ist, zum Cheli'donin zu ermitteln und vor allem festzustellen, inwieweit der sich dabei abspielende Reaktionsverlauf mit den aufgestellten Formelbildern iibereinstimmt.A. B r o m c h e l i d o n i n . Fur die Erkenntnis der Konstitution des Chelidonins schien das von W i n t g e n *) zuerst dargestellte Bromchelidonin von Bedeutung, da es sich bei zwei in essigsaurer Losung angestellten Oxydationsr versuchen mit Mercuriacetat im Gegensatz zurn Chelidonin indifferent verhielt. Es wurde daher fur moglich gehalten, dal3 sich das Broms chelidonin auch bei der Acetylierung und beim H o f m a n n schen Abbau anders verhalten werde als Chelidonin. Durch den Eintritt von Brom fur Wasserstoff konnte ,die Stabilitat des Geriistes so weit verstarkt worden sein, daf3 ein normaler H o f m a n n scher Abbau ers zielt werden konnte. Leider ,gingen die Erwartungen nicht in Er: fullung, da dmas Bromchelidonin sich genau so verhielt wie das Cheli; donin.Wurde im Chelidonin die Hydroxylgruppe verestert, so verlief die Oxydation verhaltnismafiig glatt. Die Menge des abgeschiedenen Mercuroacetates ergab, dal3 zwei Wasserstoffatome abgespalten waren. Das Dehydroprodukt war noch optisch aktiv und zwar rechtss drehend. Es lieferte gelb gefarbte Salze.
