Magnetically elicited transcranial motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were studied in 37 dogs with type 1 intervertebral disc (IVD) disease. The waveforms were recorded from both cranial tibial muscles before and after surgery. The latencies and amplitudes obtained were compared to those of a control population (n = 14). MEPs were recordable in all dogs with mild or no neurologic deficits, but they were recordable in only 50% of ambulatory dogs that were severely ataxic. MEPs could not be elicited from nonambulatory dogs. There was a significant attenuation of the amplitudes in all clinical cases, even if the dogs demonstrated back pain alone. Significantly prolonged latencies were associated with neurologic deficits. MEPs were not good predictors of neurologic recovery. The responses obtained from the side where the disc material was found were not different from those recorded from the opposite side. MEPs were very sensitive to lesions of the spinal cord, as indicated by the significant changes in the waves in patients with mild or no neurologic deficits and in the loss of response in dogs that still demonstrated purposeful movement. Neurologic exams provided more accurate diagnoses and prognoses than did MEPs in dogs with IVD disease.

1. It was hypothesized that passive movement of either the whole leg or its separate segments, in a manner mimicking human gait, leads to attenuation of the soleus H reflex. It was further hypothesized that this attenuation arises from presynaptic effects. Reflex amplitudes were observed in humans during natural bipedal and unipedal stepping on the spot, during passive stepping, during passive movement of the lower limb segments about the hip, knee, and ankle individually in a stepping fashion, and during passive movement with tonic contraction of the soleus muscle. 2. In natural stepping at a cadence of 54 steps/min, the reflex means were substantially depressed in the swing phase (P < 0.01). (Means, standing control 90.1%, unipedal 8.3%, bipedal 6.9%, of maximum M wave.) During the stance phase, reflex magnitudes were mildly and significantly elevated in four of six subjects, compared with standing controls (P < 0.05). 3. For passive stepping, subjects were dorsally tilted 20 and 90 degrees (lying supine) from the vertical position, to obtain quiet electromyograms (EMGs) in the postural muscles. Recorded during natural stepping, the right leg was manipulated to match the electrogoniometer traces of the three major joints. 4. At 20 degrees of tilt of the body, mean H reflexes were significantly lower, by 26.4%, compared with the supine position (P < 0.05). During passive stepping movement of the leg at 54 steps/min, the reflex was profoundly attenuated over the entire cycle (P < 0.01). The significantly attenuated reflexes during active stepping and during passive stepping movement of the whole leg were not significantly different at the point where the limb approached full flexion in the swing phase (P > 0.48). This was the case for measurements made at either body position, 20 degrees dorsal tilt or supine. 5. Passive flexion-extension, around either the hip or the knee, significantly inhibited the mean reflex magnitude close to full flexion, at either body position (P < 0.01). Such movement around the ankle resulted in significant inhibition of the reflex in two of the four subjects (P < 0.05). The numeric sum of the reflex depression arising from the flexion-extension of the individual joints was greater than that arising from movement of the whole limb. 6. With the ankle braced, the significant reflex attenuation remained when a tonic isometric contraction of the soleus muscle was introduced. Movement-related gating of cerebral somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) occurs during active and passive movements of both the upper and the lower limbs. The general hypothesis was tested that the brain participates in setting the gain of the ascending path from somatosensory receptors of the human leg to the somatosensory cortex. In experiment 1, SEPs from Cz' and soleus H-reflexes were evoked by electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve in the popliteal fossa during passive movement about the right ankle. Early SEPs and H-reflexes sampled during simple passive movement were significantly attenuated when compared with stationary controls (P<0.05). The additional requirement of tracking the passive ankle movement with the other foot led to a significant relative facilitation of mean SEP, but not H-reflex amplitude, compared with means from passive movement alone (P<0.05). In experiment 2, SEPs were evoked in the active (tracking) leg during a forewarned reaction-time task. Subjects were required to move in a preferred direction or to track the passive movement of their right foot with their left. Significant attenuation of early SEP components occurred 100 ms prior to EMG onset (P<0.05), with no apparent effect due to tracking. In the 3rd experiment, SEPs and H-reflexes were evoked in the passively moved leg (the target for active movement of the left leg) during the same forewarned reaction-time task. During the warning period, SEPs were significantly attenuated compared with stationary controls for non-tracking movements, but not for movements involving tracking (P<0.05). It is concluded that centrifugal factors are important in modulating SEP gain required by the kinaesthetic demands of the task.

Previous studies have revealed the influence of ongoing sensory discharge on modulating the central representation of muscle afferents from individual limbs. In the present study, we explored the potential for such modulatory influence on the afferent discharge arising from induced whole-body movement. Vestibular and somato-sensory inputs arise from such whole-body movement. The convergence of these two modalities is important in motor control, especially for the maintenance of postural stability. We hypothesised that transmission of proprioceptive and vestibular information to the cortex would be reduced as a result of muscle-spindle discharge in knee extensor muscles. Perturbation-evoked responses (PERs), recorded from central scalp electrodes (C3, CZ, C4), were evoked through rapid translations of subjects who were seated in a chair on a movable platform. PERs were recorded during passive linear translations alone and preceded by vibration of the patellar tendon. The PER was characterised by a slow, negative potential peaking at approximately 150 ms (N150) following displacement of the chair. The amplitude of the PER was reduced following vibration to 56% of the control. Such reduction of PERs was comparable to the attenuation of somatosensory evoked potentials and soleus H-reflex magnitudes from tibial-nerve stimulation. We conclude that muscle-spindle discharge in knee extensor muscles leads to gating of both of these afferent pathways. These results have potential implications to the understanding of the CNS control of stability during ongoing movement.
