Bat acoustic libraries are important tools that assemble echolocation calls to allow the comparison and discrimination to confirm species identifications. The Sonozotz project represents the first nation‐wide library of bat echolocation calls for a megadiverse country. It was assembled following a standardized recording protocol that aimed to cover different recording habitats, recording techniques, and call variation inherent to individuals. The Sonozotz project included 69 species of echolocating bats, a high species richness that represents 50% of bat species found in the country. We include recommendations on how the database can be used and how the sampling methods can be potentially replicated in countries with similar environmental and geographic conditions. To our knowledge, this represents the most exhaustive effort to date to document and compile the diversity of bat echolocation calls for a megadiverse country. This database will be useful to address a range of ecological questions including the effects of anthropogenic activities on bat communities through the analysis of bat sound.
ResumenEl Lago de Chapala es el más grande de México, es un sitio de interés para la conservación biológica, declarado sitio Ramsar, además de ser reconocido como un Área de Importancia para la Conservación de las Aves (aica 58). Los humedales de Jalisco son de gran importancia para la conservación de las aves; sin embargo, existen pocos estudios, específicamente sobre las aves del Lago de Chapala. En este estudio realizamos el inventario de la comunidad de aves del Puerto Interior Turístico Jocotepec, un parque urbano de la ribera de Chapala. Realizamos el estudio de abril de 2015 a marzo de 2016. Registramos 100 especies de aves pertenecientes a 14 órdenes y 34 familias. El 69% de las aves son residentes, 30% son visitantes de invierno y 1% transitorias. Así mismo, comparamos la riqueza y composición encontrada con otros estudios realizados en el estado de Jalisco. Resalta la presencia de Rallus longirostris, una especie residente y endémica en el centro-occidente de México que presenta los valores de vulnerabilidad más altos. Destacamos la importancia biológica del parque urbano y sugerimos incrementar el número de estudios sobre las aves del Lago de Chapala.Palabras clave: Avifauna, aves acuáticas, parque urbano, humedales, riqueza de especies, sitio Ramsar. AbstractLake Chapala is the largest lake in Mexico. It is an area of interest for biological conservation, designated as a Ramsar site and recognized as an Important Bird Conservation Area for Mexico (aica 58). The wetlands of Jalisco are of high importance for bird conservation; however, there are few studies about the birds of Lake Chapala. We studied bird community in the Puerto Interior Turistico Jocotepec, an urban park of Lake Chapala. We conducted our study from April 2015 to March 2016. We registered 100 bird species of 14 orders and 34 families. Sixty-nine percent of birds are residents, 30% are winter visitors, and 1% are transient. Also, we compared species richness and composition between our results and other studies from the state of Jalisco. We highlight the presence of Rallus longirostris, a resident and endemic species to central-western Mexico, which has the highest vulnerability value. We highlight the biological importance of the urban park and we suggest increasing the number of bird research in Lake Chapala.
Presentamos evidencia de la presencia del chipe atigrado (Setophaga tigrina) en el interior del estado de Jalisco en temporada invernal dos décadas después de su primer y único registro en las costas del estado, cuya distribución es común en las costas del Caribe mexicano y la península de Yucatán en época de migración. Capturamos, fotografiamos y anillamos a un individuo macho de segundo año al que se le tomaron datos morfométricos en febrero de 2018. Analizamos bases de datos electrónicas sobre la presencia de esta especie en México, con lo que enfatizamos la importancia de las comunidades de observación ciudadana y su relación con el incremento de observaciones de especies consideradas raras y accidentales.
