Apoio: FAPESPThe energy necessary for muscle contraction is obtained from the hydrolysis of ATP, releasing inorganic phosphate. ATP can be furnished by phosphocreatine, glucose, glycogen, amino acids and free fatty acids. The production of ATP is much more efficient in the presence of oxygen than in its absence. The anaerobic metabolism of glucose, although less efficient than the aerobic, represents an important and rapid mechanism of energy generation. Several factors regulate the activity of the glycolytic pathway, such as the availability of oxygen, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity and the ATP/ADP ratio. As this ratio decreases the anaerobic glycolysis is stimulated, increasing the production of pyruvate and lactate.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of oral supplementation of creatine on the muscular responses to aerobic training. Twelve purebred Arabian horses were submitted to aerobic training for 90 d, with and without creatine supplementation, and evaluated with respect to BW and BCS and to the area and frequency of the different types of muscle fibers in the gluteus medius. Supplementation consisted of the daily administration of 75 g of creatine monohydrate mixed into the ration for the 90 d of training. Physical conditioning was conducted on a high-performance treadmill, and training intensity was stipulated by calculating the velocity at which blood lactate reaches 4 mmol/L, determined monthly for each animal. The individual intensity of physical force at 80% of aerobic threshold was established. Morphometry of gluteus medius muscle fibers was performed on frozen sections processed for histochemical analysis of myosin adenosine triphosphatase and immunohistochemistry of slow-contracting myosin. The results demonstrated that the animals maintained a moderate BCS without alteration of BW during the course of training, providing evidence of equilibrium between food intake and caloric expenditure during the study period. The present study demonstrated that aerobic training for 90 d caused hypertrophy of fiber types I (P = 0.04), IIA (P = 0.04), and IIX (P = 0.01), as well as an increase in the relative area occupied by type I fibers (P = 0.02) at the expense of type IIX fibers (P = 0.03), resulting in modifications of the contractile and metabolic characteristics of the gluteus medius muscle. It was not possible to show any beneficial effect from creatine on the skeletal muscle characteristics examined.

The effect of intratendineous injections of polysulphated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) as treatment of collagenase-induced tendonitis was studied. Two groups (GI and GII) of five Arabian horses each, males and females, two to six year-old, were submitted to experimental tendinitis of the superficial digital flexor tendon of the left thoracic limb by intratendineous injection of 1.0ml of collagenase (2.5mg/ml). Seven days after the induced-lesions were created, the horses of GI received five intralesional injections of 1.0ml (125mg) of PSGAG, every four days. Horses of GII received injections of saline in the same dose and rate. Clinical and ultrasonographic evaluations were performed periodically, during 150 days. All animals showed lameness, increased local pain, heat and swelling 24 hours after the injury was created. All signs, except to swelling, which remained visible by the end of the study, showed regression in all animals. Lesions of variable size, shape and position were evidenced by the ultrasonographic evaluation, reaching maximum severity between the seventh and the 23 rd days. By the end of the study, the echogenicity grade ranged from 1 to 2, and the grade of fiber alignment from 0 to 2. The histopathologic analysis demonstrated repair areas with intense fibroplasia and neovascularization, collagen fibers poorly organized, and thickened hypercellular endotenon. The data of this study did not show significant differences between the treated and control groups, therefore leading to the conclusion that the intralesional injection of PSGAG did not have beneficial effects in the treatment of collagenase-induced tendinitis.Keywords: polysulphated glycosaminoglycan, tendinitis, equine RESUMO Estudou-se o efeito de aplicações intratendíneas do polissulfato de glicosaminoglicanas (PSGAG) no tratamento de tendinite induzida pela colagenase. Dois grupos (GI e GII) de cinco eqüinos da raça PuroSangue Árabe, machos e fêmeas, com idades entre dois e seis anos, foram submetidos à tendinite do tendão flexor digital superficial do membro torácico esquerdo por aplicação intratendínea de 1,0ml de colagenase (2,5mg/ml). Decorridos sete dias da indução da lesão, os eqüinos do GI receberam cinco aplicações intralesionais de 1,0ml (125mg) de PSGAG, a intervalos de quatro dias, enquanto que os do GII receberam aplicações de solução fisiológica em igual volume e freqüência. Estudaram-se alterações na freqüência cardíaca e variáveis hematológicas de eqüinos Puro Sangue Árabe (PSA), submetidos a exercício intenso em esteira rolante sob condições tropicais. Para tanto, 24 eqüinos, treinados, realizaram exercício teste de intensidade crescente e amostras de sangue foram obtidas durante as etapas de esforço 4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 9 e 10 m.s-1, com 10% de inclinação. As colheitas de sangue foram realizadas 15 segundos antes do término de cada etapa. A freqüência cardíaca foi obtida em cada etapa do exercício teste. Com as amostras de sangue foram obtidos, hematócrito, hemácias, hemoglobina e leucócitos totais. Foram calculados índices hematimétricos absolutos, volume corpuscular médio (VCM), hemoglobina corpuscular média (HCM) e a concentração de hemoglobina corpuscular média (CHCM). Os resultados mostram que houve variação significativa (p < 0,05), a partir do repouso, entre os valores médios da freqüência cardíaca e das variáveis hematimétricas. Destaque para o VCM e HCM que aumentaram significativamente (p < 0,05) na etapa de esforço máximo (10m/s) demonstrando haver anisocitose durante o exercício intenso. Desta forma, o grau das alterações destas variáveis fisiológicas está relacionado com a intensidade e duração do exercício teste.

The objective of this work w a s t o c o m p a r e physiologic parameters of a group of trained horses submitted to 30 and 60km endurance exercises with an average speed of 10 and 15km/h, respectively. One of t h e g ro u p s w a s t re a t e d , o r a l l y, w i t h a n h i p e r t o n i c electrolyte paste before, during and after the task. The results revealed that the administration of the electrolyte paste did not show any deleterious effect on the animals, a n d a l s o s u g g e s t t h a t t h e s u p p l e m e n t a t i o n w i t h a n electrolyte source should contribute for the performance of horses submitted to prolonged efforts.
