The metacommunity framework has greatly advanced our understanding about the importance of local and regional processes structuring ecological communities. However, information on how metacommunity structure and the relative strengths of their underlying mechanisms change through time is largely lacking. Dynamic systems that undergo environmental temporal changes and disturbances, such as floodplains, serve as natural laboratories to explore how their metacommunity structure change in time. Here we applied the Elements of Metacommunity Structure framework and variation partitioning analysis to assess how temporal changes in the local environmental factors and regional dispersal processes in the rain season influence a seasonal floodplain‐fish metacommunity. Across four months, relevant environmental factors were measured across 21 patches where over 3500 individual fish were sampled. Connectivity was measured using landscape resistance‐based metrics and additional spatial variation in metacommunity structure was assessed via spatial autocorrelation functions. The metacommunity structure changed from nestedness, at the beginning of the flood season, to a quasi‐Clementsian gradient at the end. Our analyses show that connectivity is only important in the beginning of the flood season whereas environment is only important at the end. These results suggest that this metacommunity is structured by changes between dispersal limitation and environmental filtering through time.

Clove oil is used as a fish anesthetic because it is a natural and inexpensive product with low toxicity risks. The goal of the present study was to determine the appropriate concentration of clove oil for small-sized tropical fish to be used in mark-recapture studies or when individuals are to be sacrificed. We applied three different clove oil concentrations (D1=0.05 mL, D2=0.10 mL and D3=0.20 mL per 500 mL of water) on three small-sized fish species. We found a negative relationship between induction time and treatment for two species (Hyphessobrycon sp.1 and Hemigrammus sp.), while concentration was unrelated to recovery time. Fish body length was positively related to induction time in the D2 treatment for Hemigrammus sp., and negatively for Hyphessobrycon sp.1 in the D1 treatment, but was unrelated to recovery time for three species and treatments. Mortality rates varied across treatments, but higher rates were observed with higher clove oil concentrations. We conclude that 0.05 mL of clove oil per 500 mL of water is the most efficient dose for studies where fish will be released back to their natural habitats, while 0.20 mL of clove oil is recommended for studies that require fish euthanization for further laboratory analyses.Keywords: Eugenol, anesthesia, euthanasia, field experiment, fish manipulation.A eficiência do óleo de cravo como anestésico e em procedimentos de eutanaisa em peixes de pequeno porte Resumo O óleo de cravo é recomendado como anestésico para peixes por ser produto de origem natural, baixo custo e apresentar poucos riscos de intoxicação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar concentrações adequadas de óleo de cravo para anestesiar ou eutanasiar peixes de pequeno porte em ambiente natural. Foram testadas três concentrações do anestésico (D1=0,05 mL, D2=0,10 mL e D3=0,20 mL) em três espécies de peixes de pequeno. Houve uma relação negativa entre o tempo para a sedação dos indivíduos e a concentração para duas espécies (Hyphessobrycon sp.1 e Hemigrammus sp.), porém não foi encontrada relação entre o tempo para recuperação e as concentrações. Os exemplares maiores de Hemigrammus sp. levaram mais tempo para serem sedados no tratamento D2, já o contrário foi observado para Hyphessobrycon sp.1 no tratamento D1, enquanto que não houve efeito do comprimento no tempo de recuperação das três espécies. A mortalidade dos indivíduos variou entre as três concentrações do anestésico e as maiores taxas de mortalidade ocorreram nas maiores concentrações. Desse modo, a concentração de 0,05 mL é eficiente para estudos que envolvem manuseio e a soltura dos peixes, enquanto que a concentração de 0,20 mL é recomendada em estudos onde os peixes precisam ser sacrificados.Palavras-chave: Eugenol, anestesia, eutanásia, experimento de campo, manipulação de peixes.

The influence of habitat, biomass of herbaceous vegetation, depth and distance from permanent water bodies on the structure of fish assemblages of a seasonal floodplain was evaluated using data collected along 22 transects in an area of 25 km 2 in the floodplain of Cuiabá River, Pantanal, Brazil. Each transect was sampled for fish using throw traps and gillnets during the flood period of 2006. Multivariate multiple regression analysis and multivariate analysis of covariance indicated that depth was the only variable that affected the structure of the fish assemblage, both for quantitative data (abundance) and qualitative data (presence-absence). Species such as Neofundulus parvipinnis and Laetacara dorsigera were more abundant in shallower sites (below 25 cm), while Serrasalmus maculatus and Metynnis mola were found mostly in the deepest areas (over 55 cm). However, species such as Hoplias malabaricus and Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus occurred at all sampled depths. Although the distribution of most species was restricted to a few sites, there was a positive relationship between species richness and depth of the water body. Surprisingly, the replacement of native vegetation by exotic pasture did not affect the fish assemblage in the area, at the probability level considered.A influência do habitat, biomassa de vegetação herbácea, da profundidade e da distância de corpos d'água permanentes sobre a estrutura da assembleia de peixes da planície sazonalmente inundada foi avaliada com dados coletados em 22 transectos em uma área de 25 km² na planície de inundação do rio Cuiabá, Pantanal. Cada transecto foi amostrado para peixes usando "throw trap" e rede de espera no período de cheia de 2006. Análises de regressão múltipla multivariada e análises de covariância multivariada indicaram que a profundidade foi a única das variáveis consideradas no estudo que afetou a estrutura da assembleia de peixes, tanto para os dados quantitativos (abundância) quanto para os dados qualitativos (presença-ausência). Espécies como Neofundulus parvipinnis e Laetacara dorsigera foram mais abundantes em locais mais rasos (abaixo de 25 cm), enquanto as espécies Serrasalmus maculatus e Metynnis mola foram encontradas principalmente nos locais mais profundos (acima de 55 cm). Entretanto espécies como Hoplias malabaricus e Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus ocorreram em todas as profundidades amostradas. Apesar de grande parte das espécies apresentarem distribuição restrita a poucos locais, houve uma relação positiva entre a riqueza de espécies e a profundidade do corpo d'água. Surpreendentemente, no nível de probabilidade considerado, a substituição da vegetação nativa por pastagens exóticas não afetou a assembleia de peixes na área estudada.

Although dung beetles are important members of ecological communities and indicators of ecosystem quality, species diversity, and how it varies over space and habitat types, remains poorly understood in the Brazilian Cerrado. We compared dung beetle communities among plant formations in the Serra Azul State Park (SASP) in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Sampling (by baited pitfall and flight-interception traps) was carried out in 2012 in the Park in four habitat types: two different savanna formations (typical and open) and two forest formations (seasonally deciduous and gallery). A total of 5,400 individuals collected comprised 57 species in 22 genera. Typical savanna had the greatest species richness and abundance, followed by open savanna and deciduous forest, while the gallery forest had the fewest species but high abundance. Tunnelers (one of three main nesting behavior guilds) showed the greatest richness and abundance (except in the gallery forest, where one dweller species was extremely abundant) in all plant formations. We found that species richness and abundance of the dung beetle community are influenced by differences among plant formations. Habitat heterogeneity in the different plant formations along with anthropic influences (fire, habitat fragmentation) are cited as important factors that explain guild and species richness and distribution patterns. These results emphasize the importance of protected areas, such as SASP, for the maintenance and conservation of species diversity in the Brazilian Cerrado.

Context The replacement of native vegetation by exotic grasses for livestock production is driving landscape homogenization, habitat fragmentation and reducing connectivity between habitat patches in floodplains ecosystems. Objective In this context we examined how changes in native and exotic vegetation cover, connectivity and water depth affect the attributes of the small [standard length (SL) \ 80 mm as adults] and large-sized fish assemblages (SL C 80 mm as adults). MethodWe assessed the effects of water depth, exotic and native vegetation cover and habitat connectivity on the abundance, species richness, body size and biomass of fish assemblages in a 25 km 2 area of the seasonal habitats of the Pantanal wetland over 5 years. Results We showed that fish assemblage response to meso-scale variation in water depth, vegetation cover and habitat connectivity in seasonal habitats is sizedependent. The gradient from exotic to natural vegetation cover did not affect the assemblages of small-sized fish, which were mostly regulated by water depth, habitat connectivity and the gradient from grassland to forest. However, besides being affected by water depth and habitat connectivity, large-sized fish were also affected by the gradient from exotic to natural vegetation cover. Conclusion Our results indicate that transformations in the landscape and changes in the dynamics of inundation may have negative consequences for the long-term persistence of fish assemblages in the Pantanal wetlands.
