Pretende-se, por meio deste artigo, refletir acerca da história da universidade ocidental, seus principais modelos institucionais e a espacialização destes juntamente a diversos contextos urbanos. Mediante pesquisa bibliográfica e análises de localização e implantação, conjetura-se sobre a importância da ligação entre a instituição de ensino e a própria sociedade, destacando a relevância do sentimento de pertencimento por parte da comunidade e seu significado juntamente ao meio urbano. As análises de implantação e localização são delimitadas pelos três principais modelos de universidade (alemão, francês e norte-americano), destacando-se um exemplo de cada modelo para análise. Quando do modelo francês, foram apresentados dois exemplos devido à sua proximidade. Desta forma, o artigo visa destacar a importância, não apenas de modelos e metodologias, ou da trajetória histórica da instituição, mas da relação entre espacialização e significado da universidade dentro das sociedades atuais.
