Automatic systems for estimating operator fatigue have application in safety-critical environments. A system which could estimate level of fatigue from speech would have application in domains where operators engage in regular verbal communication as part of their duties. Previous studies on the prediction of fatigue from speech have been limited because of their reliance on subjective ratings and because they lack comparison to other methods for assessing fatigue. In this paper, we present an analysis of voice recordings and psychophysiological test scores collected from seven aerospace personnel during a training task in which they remained awake for 60 h. We show that voice features and test scores are affected by both the total time spent awake and the time position within each subject’s circadian cycle. However, we show that time spent awake and time-of-day information are poor predictors of the test results, while voice features can give good predictions of the psychophysiological test scores and sleep latency. Mean absolute errors of prediction are possible within about 17.5% for sleep latency and 5–12% for test scores. We discuss the implications for the use of voice as a means to monitor the effects of fatigue on cognitive performance in practical applications.

Abstract. Automatic systems for estimating operator fatigue have application in safety-critical environments. We develop and evaluate a system to detect fatigue from speech recordings collected from speakers kept awake over a 60-hour period. A binary classification system (fatigued/not-fatigued) based on time spent awake showed good discrimination, with 80% unweighted accuracy using raw features, and 90% with speaker-normalised features. We describe the data collection, feature analysis, machine learning and cross-validation used in the study. Results are promising for real-world applications in domains such as aerospace, transportation and mining where operators are in regular verbal communication as part of their normal working activities.

Abstract:A modern cockpit is the heart of a complex aerospace system. Representing complex information in a way that pilots can understand effectively remains a challenge. To understand how best to support pilots' information needs, we face the difficulty of having to study the complexity of the activity itself, the complexity of the environment, and the hidden nature of the information needs of the pilots. This paper shows how a "cue-recall debrief method" can be used as a powerful technique in investigating pilots' cognitive processes and activities. Moreover, it is claimed (Omodei, Wearing & McLennan, 1997) that this technique has little effect on the complexity of the activity, operating environment and the pilot's experience. Using this method has uncovered distinct informationevolution stages, references, and strategies that pilots use when flying an automated aircraft.

BackgroundThe study of decision making in complex naturalistic environments poses several challenges. In response to these, video-stimulated cued-recall-debrief was developed. It involves an individual wearing a head-mounted camera which records a task from their point of view. Afterwards, footage captured is reviewed along with a facilitated debrief to help externalise cognitive processes. In theory, motion, audio and visual cues generate a high level of experiential immersion which helps the expert to articulate previously hidden thoughts and actions.ObjectiveTo examine the current evidence for video-stimulated cued-recall-debrief as a means of explicating expert thoughts and feelings in complex tasks in a range of environments.Study selectionMEDLINE, EMBASE, Education Resources Information Center, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO and Google Scholar were searched for articles containing the key terms ‘cued-recall (debrief)’, ‘decision making’, ‘skills’ and ‘video recording’. Studies were included if they examined the following outcomes: (1) feasibility, (2) extent of experiential immersion, (3) ability to generate unique insight into decision-making processes and (4) current applications. 1831 articles were identified initially, and 9 studies were included in the final review.FindingsVideo-stimulated cued-recall-debrief is associated with a high level of experiential immersion and generates between two and four times the number of recollections compared with free recall. It can be used to build models of cognitive activity and to characterise the way in which more and less skilled individuals tend to think and feel.ConclusionsThe technique could be used to explicate expertise within medicine: these insights into performance could be used as a training tool for other practitioners.Trial registration numberCRD42017057484.

Функция зрительного анализатора играет одну из ведущих ролей в развитии ребенка. С первых дней жизни ребенка зрение тесно связывается с осязанием, слухом, обонянием и другими видами чувствительности. В результате образуются сложные динамические системы связей, являющиеся чувственной основой всей психической деятельности и ориентации ребенка в пространстве.Понимание процессов и создание оптимальных условий для раннего нейросенсорного развития имеет важное значение как для ухода за здоровым новорожденным и ребенком раннего возраста, так и для организации развивающего ухода за недоношенными и больными детьми в условиях стационара.Новорожденный способен распознавать контрастнее изображения (лица и глаза), которые имеют округлые формы и которые легче наблюдать, так как его глазные мышцы еще не имеют большой практики при совершении резких движений. Зрительный аппарат недоношенного новорожденного имеет дополнительные ограничения функции и точки уязвимости.В статье рассматриваются аспекты визуальной системы в периоде новорожденности с более детальным разбором особенностей, связанных с недоношенностью, описываются механизмы, объясняющие негативное влияние на процессы визуального развития интенсивного прямого света, отсутствия объектов и узоров в фокусе, недостатка внимания (например, седативный эффект), отсутствия изменений в окружающей среде, недостатка движения, полной темноты или отсутствия достаточного освещения при пробуждении.Длительный период выхаживания недоношенного ребенка в стационаре в отделении реанимации и интенсивной терапии в условиях микроклимата инкубатора с соблюдением охранительного режима, невозможность полноценного материнского ухода, а значит, отсутствие сенситивных стимулов приходится на самый важный период развития нервной системы. Именно в этом возрасте очень важно адекватное и своевременное начало нейросенсорного развития, в связи с чем возрастает необходимость исследований, позволяющих определить оптимальные сроки начала и методологию раннего развивающего ухода.Финансирование.
