We present a constructive proof of Alexandrov's theorem regarding the existence of a convex polytope with a given metric on the boundary. The polytope is obtained as a result of a certain deformation in the class of generalized convex polytopes with the given boundary. We study the space of generalized convex polytopes and discover a relation with the weighted Delaunay triangulations of polyhedral surfaces. The existence of the deformation follows from the non-degeneracy of the Hessian of the total scalar curvature of a positively curved generalized convex polytope. The latter is shown to be equal to the Hessian of the volume of the dual generalized polyhedron. We prove the non-degeneracy by generalizing the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality. Our construction of a convex polytope from a given metric is implemented in a computer program.
A Kokotsakis polyhedron with quadrangular base is a neighborhood of a quadrilateral in a quad surface. Generically, a Kokotsakis polyhedron is rigid. Up to now, several flexible classes were known, but a complete classification was missing. In the present paper, we provide such a classification. The analysis is based on the fact that the dihedral angles of a Kokotsakis polyhedron are related by an Euler-Chasles correspondence. It results in a diagram of elliptic curves covering complex projective planes. A polyhedron is flexible if and only if this diagram commutes.
Ivory's Lemma is a geometrical statement in the heart of J. Ivory's calculation of the gravitational potential of a homeoidal shell. In the simplest planar case, it claims that the diagonals of a curvilinear quadrilateral made by arcs of confocal ellipses and hyperbolas are equal.In the first part of this paper, we deduce Ivory's Lemma and its numerous generalizations from complete integrability of billiards on conics and quadrics. In the second part, we study analogs of Ivory's Lemma in Liouville and Stäckel metrics. Our main focus is on the results of the German school of differential geometry obtained in the late 19 -early 20th centuries that might be lesser know today.In the third part, we generalize Newton's, Laplace's, and Ivory's theorems on gravitational and Coulomb potential of spheres and ellipsoids to the spherical and hyperbolic spaces. V. Arnold extended the results of Newton, Laplace, and Ivory to algebraic hypersurfaces in Euclidean space; we generalize Arnold's theorem to the spaces of constant curvature.
We present proofs of two classical theorems. The first one, due to Darboux and Sauer, states that infinitesimal rigidity is a projective invariant; the second one establishes relations (infinitesimal Pogorelov maps) between the infinitesimal motions of a Euclidean framework and of its hyperbolic and spherical images. The arguments use the static formulation of infinitesimal rigidity. The duality between statics and kinematics is established through the principles of virtual work. A geometric approach to statics, due essentially to Grassmann, makes both theorems straightforward. Besides, it provides a simple derivation of the formulas both for the Darboux-Sauer correspondence and for the infinitesimal Pogorelov maps.
We prove that a 3-dimensional hyperbolic cusp with convex polyhedral boundary is uniquely determined by the metric induced on its boundary. Furthermore, any hyperbolic metric on the torus with cone singularities of positive curvature can be realized as the induced metric on the boundary of a convex polyhedral cusp.The proof uses the discrete total curvature functional on the space of "cusps with particles", which are hyperbolic cone-manifolds with the singular locus a union of half-lines. We prove, in addition, that convex polyhedral cusps with particles are rigid with respect to the induced metric on the boundary and the curvatures of the singular locus.Our main theorem is equivalent to a part of a general statement about isometric immersions of compact surfaces.
