In this paper, we present a study on the surface modification of polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) polymer by plasma treatment. The samples were treated by nitrogen and oxygen plasma for different time periods between 3 and 90 s. The plasma was created by a radio frequency (RF) generator. The gas pressure was fixed at 75 Pa and the discharge power was set to 200 W. The samples were treated in the glow region, where the electrons temperature was about 4 eV, the positive ions density was about 2 × 10 15 m −3 , and the neutral atom density was about 4 × 10 21 m −3 for oxygen and 1 × 10 21 m −3 for nitrogen. The changes in surface morphology were observed by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface wettability was determined by water contact angle measurements while the chemical composition of the surface was analyzed using XPS. The stability of functional groups on the polymer surface treated with plasma was monitored by XPS and wettability measurements in different time intervals. The oxygen-plasma-treated samples showed much more pronounced changes in the surface topography compared to those treated by nitrogen plasma. The contact angle of a water drop decreased from 75• for the untreated sample to 20• for oxygen and 25• for nitrogen-plasma-treated samples for 3 s. It kept decreasing with treatment time for both plasmas and reached about 10• for nitrogen plasma after 1 min of plasma treatment. For oxygen plasma, however, the contact angle kept decreasing even after a minute of plasma treatment and eventually fell below a few degrees. We found that the water contact angle increased linearly with the O/C ratio or N/C ratio in the case of oxygen or nitrogen plasma, respectively. Ageing effects of the plasma-treated surface were more pronounced in the first 3 days; however, the surface hydrophilicity was rather stable later.

The contact area of the water droplet on hydrophobic titanium planar surface (foil) was found to decrease during evaporation, whereas the contact area of the droplet on hydrophobic nanorough titanium surfaces practically remained unaffected until the complete evaporation.This demonstrates that the surface morphology and roughness at the nanoscale level substantially affect the titanium dioxide surface-water droplet interaction, opposing to previous observations for microscale structured surfaces. The difference in surface topographic nanofeatures of nanostructured titanium surfaces could be correlated not only with the time-dependency of the contact area, but also with time-dependency of the contact angle and electrochemical properties of these surfaces.

Conducting polymers (CP), namely polyaniline (PANI) and polypyrrole (PPy), are promising materials applicable for the use as biointerfaces as they intrinsically combine electronic and ionic conductivity. Although a number of works have employed PANI or PPy in the preparation of copolymers, composites, and blends with other polymers, there is no systematic study dealing with the comparison of their fundamental biological properties. The present study, therefore, compares the biocompatibility of PANI and PPy in terms of cytotoxicity (using NIH/3T3 fibroblasts and embryonic stem cells) and embryotoxicity (their impact on erythropoiesis and cardiomyogenesis within embryonic bodies). The novelty of the study lies not only in the fact that embryotoxicity is presented for the first time for both studied polymers, but also in the elimination of inter-laboratory variations within the testing, such variation making the comparison of previously published works difficult. The results clearly show that there is a bigger difference between the biocompatibility of the respective polymers in their salt and base forms than between PANI and PPy as such. PANI and PPy can, therefore, be similarly applied in biomedicine when solely their biological properties are considered. Impurity content detected by mass spectroscopy is presented. These results can change the generally accepted opinion of the scientific community on better biocompatibility of PPy in comparison with PANI.

Nonthermal plasma (NTP), or cold plasma, has shown many advantages in the agriculture sector as it enables removal of pesticides and contaminants from the seed surface, increases shelf life of crops, improves germination and resistance to abiotic stress. Recent studies show that plasma treatment indeed offers unique and environmentally friendly processing of different seeds, such as wheat, beans, corn, soybeans, barley, peanuts, rice and Arabidopsis thaliana, which could reduce the use of agricultural chemicals and has a high potential in ecological farming. This review covers the main concepts and underlying principles of plasma treatment techniques and their interaction with seeds. Different plasma generation methods and setups are presented and the influence of plasma treatment on DNA damage, gene expression, enzymatic activity, morphological and chemical changes, germination and resistance to stress, is explained. Important plasma treatment parameters and interactions of plasma species with the seed surface are presented and critically discussed in correlation with recent advances in this field. Although plasma agriculture is a relatively new field of research, and the complex mechanisms of interactions are not fully understood, it holds great promise for the future. This overview aims to present the advantages and limitations of different nonthermal plasma setups and discuss their possible future applications.

This study indicates that the adherence of oral streptococci can be modified by titanium anodization and nanotube diameter.

Argon plasma treatment was used to modify the surface of atelocollagen films using a plasmochemical reactor. To evaluate the effects of the treatment, the untreated and treated samples were characterized by Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Cell growth was carried out by culturing human immortalized keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells and proliferation was measured via MTT assay. It was observed that argon plasma treatment significantly enhanced the extent of cell proliferation, which was ascribed to the favourable role of plasma treatment in inducing surface oxygen-containing entities together with increasing surface roughness. This can be considered as a potentially promising approach for tissue regeneration purposes.

In order to study the role of polymer crystallinity, we performed oxygen plasma treatment experiments on amorphous and semicrystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) polymers. The samples were treated in weakly ionized, highly dissociated RF oxygen plasma in glow region for different exposure times. We found that the degree of polymer crystallinity has an influence on the recombination probability of neutral atoms which interact with the surface. For amorphous polymers the recombination coefficient is in the range from 8.3 × 10−4 to 2.1 × 10−4 and for semicrystalline from 4 × 10−4 to 2.5 × 10−5. The degree of crystallinity in plasma processing also has influences on surface topography, formation of new functional groups, etching and hydrophobic recovery (ageing). Therefore, the polymer crystallinity should be taken into consideration when optimizing plasma treatment processes for industry as well as for accounting neutral atom recombination on polymer surfaces.
