Quality attributes of citrus pulp silages that were ensiled alone and combined with maize silage were determined. Fresh samples of lemon, orange and tangerine pulps, maize plants and their combinations were fermented in glass jars for 90 days at about 20 - 25 °C. Treatments included i) 100% maize silage as control (MS); ii) 100% lemon pulp silage (LPS); iii) 100% orange pulp silage (OPS); iv) 100% tangerine pulp silage (TPS); v) 50% LPS and 50% maize silage (LPS + MS); vi) 50% OPS and 50% MS; and vii) 50% TPS and 50% maize silage (TPS + MS). The pH differed among treatment groups. The highest and lowest pH values were recorded for MS group and the OPS + MS group, respectively (3.84 vs. 3.51). The highest dry matter (DM), crude fibre (CF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and hemicellulose (HEM) were observed for MS (P <0.01). Citrus pulp silages alone had significantly greater total digestible nutrients (TDN), organic matter (OM) and non-fibre carbohydrate (NFC) values than MS and the combined silages (P <0.01). Maize silage had higher lactic acid (LA) (101.2 g/kg DM) and acetic acid (AA) (49.3 g/kg DM) concentrations than the citrus groups (P <0.05). In vitro gas production (TG), methane (CH4), metabolizable energy (ME) and organic matter digestibility (OMD) of the silages were similar (P >0.05). Thus, citrus pulps can be ensiled in spite of their moisture content. However, to increased DM and nutrient content, the citrus pulps should be ensiled with 50% maize. The objective of this research was to investigate and compare the quality of apple pomace silage ensiled with corn plant, sugar beet pulp, and pumpkin pulp for nutrient compositions. Fresh samples of apple pomace, corn plant, sugar beet pulp, pumpkin pulp, and their combinations were fermented in glass jars. The treatment groups included i) 100% apple pomace as control, ii) 100% corn plants, iii) 100% sugar beet pulp, iv) 100% pumpkin pulp, v) 50% apple pomace and 50% sugar beet pulp, vi) 50% apple pomace and 50% pumpkin pulp, and vii) 50% apple pomace and 50% whole corn plant. The silage pH was different among treatment groups, ranging from 3.60 to 4.15, being lowest with a combination of apple pomace and pumpkin pulp, and highest with sugar beet pulp. Dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) contents of the silages were also different among groups, with corn silage being the highest for both values, namely 29.17% for DM and 9.92% of DM for CP. Although acid detergent fibre (ADF) and crude cellulose (CC) values differed among silages (ADF and CC contents varied between 24.47 and 38.55% of DM and 21.58-28.98% of DM among silages, respectively), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) contents remained similar. In vitro organic matter digestibility of sugar beet pulp silage (74.41% of DM) was highest among all silages, whilst corn silage (55.35% of DM) had the lowest digestibility. Sugar beet pulp silage had the highest metabolizable energy (ME) (2.67 Mcal/kg DM) and net energy lactation (NEL) (1.61 Mcal/kg DM) values among all silages. The results of the current study suggested that nutritive values of the apple pomace silage were comparable with the silages from the other plant sources. In summary, apple pomace silage is a promising feed.
The experiment was carried out to determine the effect of species on the nutritive value and methane production of citrus pulps. Species had a significant effects (P<0.001) on the chemical composition, gas production, methane production, metabolisable energy (ME) and organic matter digestibility (OMD) of citrus pulps. Crude protein (CP) content of Citrus paradise was significantly (P<0.001) higher than those of the other citrus species. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents of Citrus sinensis and Citrus reticulata were significantly (P<0.001) lower than the others. Methane production from Citrus reticulata was significantly (P<0.001) higher than those of Citrus limon and Citrus paradise. The ME of pulp from Citrus reticulata was significantly (P<0.001) higher than that of Citrus limon pulp whereas OMD of pulp from Citrus reticulata was significantly (P<0.001) higher than those of pulps from Citrus limon and Citrus paradise. As conclusion, citrus pulps from different species have a high potential as forage for ruminant animals since citrus pulps have high ME and OMD. However, the CP contents of citrus pulps should be taken into consideration and diets should be fortified with additional CP sources to compensate for the low crude protein when citrus pulps are included into ruminant diets. Keywords: Citrus pulp, nutritive value, metabolisable energy, organic matter digestibility, methane production Türün Narenciye Posalarının Besin Değerine ve Metan Üretimine Etkisi ÖzBu çalışma, türün narenciye posalarının besin değerine ve metan üretimine etkisini belirlemek için yürütülmüştür.
Üzüm suyu sanayi her yıl yüksek miktarda üzüm posası ortaya çıkartmaktadır. Üzüm posasının silajı yapılarak ruminant beslemede kullanılabilir olduğu öngörülmektedir.
