COVID-19 has had an impact on the regional and worldwide agricultural value chain, jeopardizing food security. It is time to reassess the approach of the agri-food sector and to consider that the food supply and plant health, as agrosystemic services, must depend on strategies with a low impact on productive and environmental assets. One strategy is the use and optimization of microbial genetic resources (MGR) related to agroecosystems as a source of balance, functionality, productivity, inhibition of the impact of pests and pathogens, and contribution to the profitability of agri-food activity. It is necessary to strengthen and develop regional agricultural systems that are dynamic, that mitigate damages to the environment and produce nutritional and nutraceutical foods that ensure human health. Agricultural sciences are undergoing changes in scientific paradigms that will benefit the agri-food sector if we are able to learn from the impacts of an extensive technological agriculture. Approaching agriculture from an agro-systemic point of view in which the crop-community is the functional biological unit of study and to preserve the MGR diversity are the greatest challenges to create sustainable and resilient strategies and technologies that contribute towards human health and help prevent risks during health crises such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Maize silage is used in the diet of dairy cows, with suitable results in milk yield. In this study, the composition and diversity of the bacterial communities of the silage process of Amarillo Zamorano (AZ) Mexican maize landrace with relation to the Antilope (A) commercial hybrid are described. From both types of maize, seeds were sown in experimental plots, plants harvested at the reproductive stage, chopped, and packed in laboratory micro-silos. Physicochemical parameters were evaluated, and DNA was extracted from the juice in the micro-silos. The bacterial communities were analyzed by next-generation sequencing (NGS) of seven hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene. The composition of both bacterial communities was dominated by Lactobacillales and Enterobacteriales, Lactobacillales mainly in A silage and Enterobacteriales in AZ silage; as well, the core bacterial community of both silages comprises 212 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Sugar concentration showed the highest number of significant associations with OTUs of different phyla. The structure of the bacterial communities was different in both silage fermentation processes, showing that AZ silage has a shorter fermentation process than A silage. In addition, NGS demonstrated the effect of the type of maize and local conditions on silage fermentation and contributed to potential strategies to improve the quality of AZ silage.
Introduction. México is one of the most important producers and exporters of blackberries in the world. During postharvest handling, blackberry fruits are exposed to the attack of phytopathogenic fungi. Materials and methods. To obtain Rhizopus stolonifer isolates, samples of leaves and rhizospheric soils were placed on Petri plates containing Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA). In addition, fruits were also placed in humidity chambers at 25°C. To describe the infection process on blackberry fruits by Rhizopus stolonifer, samples were taken at different intervals for a period of 72 h. All fungal isolates obtained were maintained on PDA. The bacterial colonies were isolated and purified by streaking on PDA. The antagonistic activity of the bacteria was assessed against R. stolonifer by dual culture technique on PDA. To detect the production of siderophores, the chrome azurol S assay was carried out. Results. The infection process of R. stolonifer on blackberry fruits was described for the first time in this work. Eighty-six bacterial isolates from different parts of the plant and rhizospheric soil were obtained. Bacterial isolates with antagonistic activity were identified and the production of siderophores was measured. Four isolates showed antagonistic activity against R. stolonifer. Bacillus subtilis obtained from soil was the most effective isolate. Conclusion. In this study we isolated and identified antagonistic bacteria with potential for biocontrol on Rhizopus stolonifer obtained from blackberry fruits. To our knowledge this is the first report regarding this topic.
