This study examines the publicness level of the interior spaces of public buildings. As a method, VGA (visual graph analysis) is used for analyzing the early design phases of selected municipal service buildings. In this study, the authors utilized from VGA for quantifying the publicness level of the two selected architectural competitions of municipality buildings. The method allows us analyzing the floor plans of each project in obtaining an eventual assessment of permeability and accessibility which give an idea of the levels of publicness comparatively. Subsequently, representation parameters are compared under two main criteria: connectivity and integration. The aim of the study is to understand the level of publicness and efficiency of spatial settings for the users circulating in the public buildings, which have dissimilar plan schemes. This method would be used by the designers for early design stage and provide useful feedback for understanding the level of accessibility and permeability of the structures and adjust their schemes accordingly.
This study analyses neighbourhood change, its impact on the character of Soho, and to what extent perceptions of change match objective reality. Focusing on three streets (Berwick, Old Compton and Wardour Streets), the research (2008-2018) compares objective evidence of ground floor uses with the perceptions of people living and working in Soho. There was a close match between perceptions and objective measures of change on 4 out of 7 indicators: type of use, business name, locality and business ethnicity. The paper discusses these changes in terms of commercial gentrification that threatens Soho's character.
In the history of housing, balconies always appear as an important threshold between indoor and outdoor as well as between private and public life. In the transformative story of housing, we observe that, as new spaces have been introduced into design solutions, some spaces have undergone transformations or evolved like an organism, and some of them have gradually become subject to shrinking, or even extinction. In the current case of Izmir, the balconies generally fall into the last category, as prosthetic thresholds. Therefore, in this study, we tried to reveal the transformation story that extends to near extinction of balconies, by making comparison, and display that there is a legible difference between the late modern and post-modern cases of multi-storey housing-blocks in Izmir. The difference gives clues about possible transformations in inhabitants' life-styles, besides referring to the condition of balconies in contemporary design solutions.
