Size at morphological sexual maturity, sex-ratio, and the seasonal variation in abundance of the shrimp Artemesia longinaris Bate, 1888 were assessed off Pinheira Beach, Palhoça, Santa Catarina southern Brazil. Shrimp were collected monthly from November 2003 through to October 2004, in two areas that are customarily used by local traditional fishermen (27852 0 -27851 0 S and 48833 0 -48829 0 W). Of the total of 1099 specimens measured, 23.93% were males and 76.07% females. Mean size at first maturity (LM 50 ) was estimated as 56.38 mm total length (TL) for males, and 70.34 mm TL for females. Females were significantly larger than males. Abundance of juveniles varied seasonally. A high predominance of juveniles in the areas sampled occurred in winter for both sexes, and in spring for females. In the summer and autumn, we observed a decrease in juveniles in both areas, mainly, area II. We suggest that the differential migration pattern of sexes during the reproductive cycle was the principal reason for the larger catch of females. The classical paradigm of continuous reproduction at lower latitude, with increased seasonality of the breeding period at higher latitudes, seems to apply to this species.

The stages of gonadal development for the female of white shrimp (Litopenaeus schmitti (Burkenroad, 1936)) were characterized based on histological analysis. Four stages (immature, developing, ripe and spawned) were determined according to the structure and arrangement of cells in the ovary. Each stage corresponds macroscopically to a characteristic color, except stages I (immature) and IV (spawned), in which colors are very similar and can be distinguished only microscopically. The chromatic scale varies from white/translucent (stage I), gray/green (developing), dark green to black (ripe). The mean size of cells was 54.01 µm (±3.5) (stage I), 136.80 µm (±8.8) (stage II) and 199.80 µm (±6.4) (stage III). The size frequency of cells was polymodal, and different cell stages were observed in ripe ovary, suggesting the occurrence of multiple spawning. The smallest ripe female measured 146 mm and the largest 180 mm of the total length. Estimated mean length at first maturity was 152 mm and the length at which 100% of females are mature is 170 mm. Quatro estágios (imaturo, em desenvolvimento, maduro e desovado) foram determinados de acordo a estrutura e arranjo das células no ovário. Cada estágio corresponde, microscopicamente, a uma cor característica, exceto nos estágios I (imaturo) e IV (desovado) nos quais as cores são muito similares e podem ser distinguidas apenas histologicamente. A escala cromática varia do branco/translúcido (estágio I), cinza/verde (em desenvolvimento), verde escuro a preto (maduro). O tamanho médio das células foi 54,01 µm (±3,5) (estagio I), 136,80 µm (±8,8) (estágio II) e 199,80 µm (±6,4) (estágio III). A distribuição de frequência do tamanho das células foi polimodal, e diferentes estágios celulares foram observados nos ovários maduros, sugerindo a ocorrência de desovas múltiplas. A menor fêmea madura mediu 152 mm e o comprimento em que 100% das fêmeas estavam maduras foi 170 mm.

Dieta de Sula leucogaster Boddaert (Sulidae, Aves), nas Ilhas Moleques do Sul, Florianópolis, SC. Sula leucogaster (Boddaert, 1783) nidifica em várias ilhas costeiras e oceânicas do Brasil, e utiliza como alimento uma grande diversidade de presas, capturadas em mergulhos rasos, entre 10 a 15 m, além da ictiofauna descartada na pesca de camarões. Este trabalho teve como objetivo fornecer informações básicas sobre a alimentação natural do atobá-marrom, através dos regurgitos coletados entre os anos de 2000 a 2004, nas Ilhas Moleques do Sul. Foram registradas a ocorrência de 35 espécies-presas em 257 regurgitos, totalizando 26,5 kg. Apesar da marcante sazonalidade na dieta de S. leucogaster, as maiores freqüências de regurgitos foram obtidas no verão, onde os peixes Sciaenidae, Engraulidae e Batrachoididae foram as presas mais exploradas.

Apesar dos 561,4 km e de aproximadamente 300 praias e vários estuários ao longo da costa catarinense, informações sobre as aves associadas aos ambientes de influência marítima são escassos. Durante o período de abril/2002 a maio/2003 foram realizados censos trimestrais na avifauna com o objetivo de determinar a composição e abundância dos agrupamentos, diversidade, equitabilidade e similaridade ao longo do litoral de Santa Catarina. Foram realizados 28 censos, sendo efetuados quatro por sítio e registradas a ocorrência de 62 espécies em bandos mistos, onde as aves marinhas costeiras e algumas limícolas foram as mais freqüentes e abundantes.

New records of the palaemonid prawns Leander paulensis and Periclimenes longicaudatus for the South Brazilian coast are presented. The first specie was previously recorded from Maranhão to Paraná coasts, and P. longicaudatus from Amapá to São Paulo. The Southern limit of distribution is expanded to Santa Catarina coast.

New brachyuran crabs records from Santa Catarina coast, Brazil (Decapoda: Dromiidae, Xanthidae and Inachoididae). Three species were collected, Hypoconcha arcuata, Speocarcinus carolinensis and Pyromaia tuberculata. These records represent a distribution extension for H. arcuata previously cited to São Paulo coast and P. tuberculata to Paraná coast. S. carolinensis had previous records from São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul coasts and now complete the distribution for Santa Catarina state.
