The use of the Zoom platform is one solution in supporting the implementation of online learning, which still has advantages and disadvantages in its application and utilization. This study explores teachers' perceptions about using this platform and its advantages and disadvantages in teaching and learning. This research was qualitative, following the Model of Qualitative Data Analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The data were collected through open-ended questionnaires through Google Form, involving 12 foreign language teachers. The study revealed that teachers found Zoom very useful in teaching and learning, especially during this pandemic period in delivering and explaining learning materials because Zoom provides various helpful features that support foreign language learning. Teachers perceived Zoom as an effective platform to facilitate online learning. However, teachers also admitted several challenges in using Zoom in their foreign language teachings, such as unstable connection, expensive internet credit, and time limitations.
In the teaching and learning process, one of the roles and responsibilities of teachers is to assess the skills and what is taught to students. In the assessment activity, the teacher can get feedback on the extent to which students understand what the teacher teaches. Even though the learning is done virtually, the assessment still has to be done. This study investigates teachers’ perceptions of the types, benefits, and challenges of platforms used to assess young learners’ speaking performance. The research data was obtained by conducting interviews with respondents through Google Meet and adopted the interview questions by Mpungose (2020) about the online assessment platforms. The researcher determined the respondents by using a purposive sampling technique where respondents used an online platform in assessing young learners’ speaking performance during distance learning. After the data was collected, the researcher analyzed it using an interactive model by Miles et al. (2014). This study indicates that there are various platforms that teachers can use to assess young learners’ speaking performance, including Zoom, Google Meet, Google Classroom, WhatsApp, and YouTube. The five platforms were revealed to be very useful to make it easier for teachers to assess learners’ speaking performance. Teachers can easily assess aspects of their pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and vocabulary through these five platforms. Besides helping assess learners’ speaking performance, this study also shows various challenges in its implementation, such as connection problems, assignment submission, and poor video and audio quality.
Social media acts as a source of information, entertainment media, discussion space, enriching learning resources, increasing creativity, and increasing student understanding, allowing students to create awareness about students' potential to become intellectually active. The most common social media used in EFL classrooms are Facebook, Whatsapp, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. Many have argued that YouTube provides authentic learning sources for improving students' English skills. Despite the availability and authenticity of YouTube videos to provide practice in enhancing students' listening skills, especially in an online setting, its application serves some challenges. The present study aimed to explore the students' perception of the application of YouTube in listening classes during online learning. This study was a qualitative study involving 32 university students. Data were collected from a questionnaire consisting of 31 items distributed through Google Form. The analysis resulted in students’ positive perception in the forms of four benefits: improving listening skills, increasing interest and motivation to learn, building critical thinking, and sharpening creativity. The identified shortcomings are the internet connection and the expensive internet credit. The present study confirms the usability of YouTube videos to practice students' listening skills, especially in online learning, where students need flexibility and creativity. However, it implies suggestions for stakeholders to provide stable and affordable internet connections so online learning can be conducted more effectively.
