<p>Effective protection strategies and repair methods of concrete structures guarantee their serviceability and durability for a long period of time. However, the choice of the “right” materials, according to the code-family EN 1504, does not generally ensure the success of the application. It is the choice of the right system of materials as well as the application rules and quality control which guarantee this success. To achieve this, additional regulations have been introduced in Germany in the past. However, this procedure has been declared illegal according to the decision of the European Court of Justice, so a new way had to be found. This new way is based on the specific requirements for protection and repair of each individual structure and shifts the responsibility to the design engineer.</p><p><br clear="none"/></p>
Repair and Retrofitting of the highway bridge in Wadgassen-Bridge 228 The recalculation of the bridge 228, a five span prestressed box-girder of the highway A 620 in the town of Wadgassen, showed deficits concerning both the ultimate and the serviceability limit state. This recalculation has been performed for the load case LM1 according to the DIN-Fachbericht 101. An onsite inspection exposed some corroded main construction elements. These elements were then immediately repaired. A visibility study has been carried out and many retrofitting schemes have been analysed in detail including their costs. The most favourable one has been optimized in a further design with increased detailing. The construction works have been carried out goal-orientated with great success. Furthermore, the existing structural elements were enforced carefully and resource-sparingly. The repaired and retrofitted bridge will now be able to carry the increased traffic load for a long time.
<p>In the past decades much progress has been made in Germany in the field of sustainable bridge design due to limited natural und financial resources. In 2011 a new regulation for the recalculation of highway bridges, the so called “Nachrechnungsrichtlinie”, was enforced, which accurately defines the steps to be achieved and includes sustainable aspects. The basis of the new regulation is a three block strategy. It starts with calculations of the structure taking into account the results of the former bridge investigations and all available data, continues with a feasibility study and ends with a cost-efficiency study. This procedure leads to sustainable bridge design in Germany.</p>
