This paper examines some accounting and legal aspects of the charge and discharge system and the relationship between it and the Agency Theory. This type of accounting was used when the economic activity was entrusted to an agent; it suggests that the Agency Theory is an excellent framework to analyze the accounts. Traditionally the Charge and Discharge has been linked to the decision making and control of the agent's management, on which there is a wide bibliography, however, until now, it has not been considered as an instrument to cancel conflicts that arisen in the relationship between principal and agent and getting the equilibrium of the relationship between them.We analyzed the documents and that allowed us to show different aspects as identify all characteristic elements of the agency relationship, infer the interests of principal and agents, deduct the incentives used by the principal to align the behavior of the agents and conclude that this mode of registration was able to neutralize the imbalances of interests and the asymmetric information between both.
ABSTRACTArchive of the Cathedral of Valencia custody a large number of books of accounts belonging to government chapter. The earliest were developed in the fourteenth century and many were so over the following centuries. This article is intended to present the characteristics of the method of recording used in the writing of these books of accounts to understand the dealings and accounting practices were exercised at the Cathedral in the sixteenth century. The time period selected for the investigation begins in fiscal year 1546 and ending in fiscal year 1555. Most of the 207 books analyzed belong to this period, though, to better understand the origin and evolution of the method, it has been convenient to use accounting books written in dates outside of this time interval, namely was necessary to consult the administration canonical books dedicated to the payment of distributions by canons perceived divine office assistance, and almoyna, responsible for delivering administration alms to poor, be they of the oldest preserved.
The change in the accounting method from single entry to double entry in the 15th century has been tried to explain by the influence of some different issues such as the appearance of capitalism or by the contact of Italy with other peoples. However, none of them has been able to do so satisfactorily. That is why this work, tries to show how this accounting change could be pushed by a paradigm shift: the philosophical and religious perception of the world and its passed from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It will be seen using a qualitative methodology which helps to know how the methods of charge and discharge and double entry respond to the prevailing ways of thinking in which they developed. The first one, can be associated with a Theocentric thought, typical of the Middle Ages, and the second one, double entry bookkeeping, philosophical viewpoint that are the are the most important entity in the world, which is characteristic of the Renaissance.
The charge-and-discharge system was widely used throughout previous centuries and in all types of institutions, but the variables that shape accountability arrangements have not been analysed systematically in a comprehensive way. This study provides an extensive survey of charge-and-discharge accounting across a wide time frame (from the Roman Empire to the nineteenth century), a range of institutions (government, aristocratic, church, business and so forth), and a range of countries. Such large-scale comparisons benefit researchers who are focusing on a single time period, region, or institutional type. Our main objective is to decompose the charge-and-discharge system and classify its elements in terms of cause-and-effect relationships. We adopt a qualitative methodology to identify the features, the cause-andeffect relationships, and the spheres in which meaning is perceived (accounting, institutions, and society). Based on our results, we conclude that the charge-and-discharge system is a multivariable and multicausal phenomenon used in the context of delegated management, which acquires greater relevance as a mechanism of accountability. Charge-and-discharge involves an obligation to explain and justify one's conduct. Our objective is to open further discussion in an accountability context and facilitate future indepth studies that reveal the development, processes, and effects of accountability within the accounting, institutional and social context across space and time.
