El Internet es una herramienta indispensable, las comunidades sociales favorecen publicar, compartir información y el autoaprendizaje. Propósito: Determinar el uso de las comunidades virtuales como herramienta de investigación por los estudiantes de postgrados. Material y métodos: Estudio descriptivo transversal, no experimental, por medio de una encuesta orientada al uso de comunidades sociales en investigación a estudiantes de postgrados hospitalarios de la Escuela de Estudios de Postgrado, Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, inscritos en el 2019, seleccionados aleatoriamente. Resultados: Se estudiaron a 60 personas, 50% de sexo femenino, todos admitieron uso de alguna comunidad virtual, siete de cada 10 la utilizan como referente de investigación científica y tres de cada 10 la utilizan para información no científica. La comunidad virtual para consulta de información científica más utilizada es Google 86%, Google Académico 46%, Google Drive 40%, YouTube34%, WhatsApp 18%, Facebook 16%, otras redes sociales 12%, y revistas científicas 2%. Conclusión: Un tercio de estudiantes utiliza comunidades virtuales 3 veces o más por semana como herramienta en investigación científica por motores de búsqueda; otras fuentes de revisión científica son menos utilizadas. Se deben crear iniciativas que promuevan la comunicación, innovación, emprendimiento y accesibilidad a información científica en comunidades virtuales.
Resumen La diarrea es una causa importante de mortalidad y morbilidad en los pacientes pediátricos con cáncer (1). Las causas son variadas y entre la etiología se incluye bacterias entre estas C. difficile, virus, hongos y parásitos y puede ser asociada a la mucositis provocada por el uso de quimioterapia. Propósito: Describir los parásitos intestinales obtenidos en muestras de heces simple en los pacientes que asisten a la Unidad Nacional de Oncología Pediátrica de Guatemala (UNOP). Material y método: Se incluyeron los resultados de las muestras de heces simples ingresadas al laboratorio de UNOP las cuales pertenecían a pacientes pediátricos oncológicos, durante septiembre de 2016 a abril 2017. Resultados: Se revisaron un total de 487 muestras, un 88% de las muestras eran negativas. Los parásitos con mayor prevalencia fueron: Blastocystis hominis en 27% (n=16) y Giardia lamblia en 19% (n=11). Conclusión: Existe una frecuencia importante de parásitos intestinales en las muestras recibidas en el laboratorio de UNOP procedentes de pacientes pediátricos oncológicos, principalmente Blastocystis hominis y Giardia lamblia. Se requieren estudios que correlacionen la clínica de estos pacientes para caracterizar los mismos.
