A study has been made of the presence of ants in 59 olive trees in each of three orchards under di}erent agricultural management in the province of Granada "southern Spain#\ during the months of May\ July and September 0886\ using both observational methods as well as the collection of specimens from the soil and trunk and the tree canopy[ A total of 07 species of ants were identi_ed\ 05 of which were present in the orchard of Arenales\ four in Colomera 0\ and nine in Colomera 1[ The number of species varies over the survey\ being greatest before the~owering of the trees\ this period coinciding with the lowest temperatures[ The species Tapinoma nigerrimum "Nylander# was the only species present in all the samplings of the olive orchards\ and the other common species in the three zones proved to be] Messor barbarus "L[ 0656#\ Tetramorium semilaeve Andre and Plagiolepis pygmaea "Latr[#[ Most of the species found made their nests in the soil under the tree canopy\ and only four species nested exclusively in open areas[ Ten species foraged in the tree and seven foraged in groups[ The three olive orchards were similar in phenology\ temperature and humidity\ and therefore the di}erences in the myrmecofauna at the di}erent sites were attributed to agricultural practices at each site[
AbstractThe seasonal foraging sequence of the Camponatus sp. ant on the flowering buttons of the Neoraimondia arequipensis subsp. roseiflora (Werdermann & Backeberg) Ostolaza (Cactaceae) cactus was the subject of a study at Umarcata hills, lower Rio Chillon basin, Lima, Peru. Fifteen mature cacti plants were marked randomly and the number of total buttons, up to a maximum of 50 buttons, produced by each plant was registered monthly, during twelve months, and the observed total number of ants in each flowering button was simultaneously recorded. Observations were taken monthly from October 2003 to September 2004. Similarity matrices between these months, based on phenological and ant-related data, were compared by the Procrustes technique of rotational axis. A randomized test, Procrustes test or Protest with 1000 permutations, was used to analyze the significance of (non random) association between the configurations obtained by non parametric multidimensional acaling (NMDS) ordenation technique. ...
Elasmus steffani (Viggiani) (Hymenoptera: Elasmidae) is a gregarious idiobiont ectoparasitoid of Prays oleae (Bernard) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), an olive crop pest. In the substitute host Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), the duration of the developmental stages was approximately 11–15 days. The preoviposition was 8.9 ± 5.0 days, and oviposition lasted 30.4 ± 10.5 days, with a reproduction capacity of 185.5 ± 62.3 eggs per female, for a mean of 5.4 ± 0.9 eggs per day. The oviposition rhythm reached its maximum when the parasitoid was 35 days of age. The lack of food negatively influenced survival of the adults, while those fed on a honey-water mixture lived significantly longer that those that also had access to a host as food. The female parasitoid fed upon 15% of the paralyzed larvae. The virgin female E. steffani exhibits arrhenotokic parthenogenesis.
