Schwannoma is a benign tumour that arises from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath, and is a common tumour of the head and neck. However, intraoral location is very uncommon (only 1% of all head and neck schwannomas). We report a rare case of lingual schwannoma in a 20-year-old male patient who presented with a small, slow-growing mass over the right lateral border of the tongue with 1 year of evolution and that became recently ulcerated. The patient underwent MRI examination and complete surgical excision. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination confirmed the diagnosis.
The peritoneum is the largest serous membrane of the body and can be exposed to several injuries that may cause abnormal findings on imaging exams. Linear peritoneal calcification is remarkably rare, usually secondary to long duration peritoneal dialysis. We report an uncommon case of extensive peritoneal calcification in a 39-year-old female without long exposure to peritoneal dialysis solutions, in which peritoneal calcification could be linked to Alport syndrome and previous adverse reaction to intraperitoneal iodinated contrast.Radiologist should be aware of this and related imaging findings, know when to search for them as well as understand their clinical value.
Diffuse pulmonary ossification (DPO) is a rarely diagnosed entity that may present with characteristic imaging features. It is listed in the differential diagnosis of lung parenchymal calcifications and should be considered by the radiologist if the appropriate findings are identified. We report a case of DPO secondary to mitral stenosis in a patient whose severe cardiac pathology lead to death few weeks after a chest CT was done. To date, there are no specific treatments with proved benefit in this pathology.
Introduction: Nowadays, parental active engagement in children' hospitalization has become an accepted feature. However, parental finance, social and personal costs for their involvement in their child's care have received little attention. Moreover, a child's hospitalization is, frequently, an event that occurs, unexpectedly, having a significative impact on parents' health. There is a positive relationship between parental anxiety and the length of the child's hospital admission. Aim: To synthesize and analyse the existing evidence on the health problems experienced by parents of children in a long-term hospital stay. Method: An integrative review was carried out, and scientific articles were selected from the databases MEDLINE, SciELO and CINAHL. Only parents of children (with ages between 0 and 18 years) submitted to longterm hospitalizations were included. Parents with any kind of mental or psychiatric disorder were excluded from the review. A six-step method was used to develop the revision and to analyse the results. Results: A child's hospital stay holds major changes in the routines and well-being of a family. Parents are in need of care from nurses whose primary focus are children. Children' hospitalization often leads to parental anxiety as well as stress and sleep disorders. This condition can also trigger other pathologies such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus type II or stroke. Anxiety has higher rates on mothers of male infants. Conclusion: A long-term child´s hospitalization brings an important and challenging parental adjustment affecting their health and wellbeing. Thereby, nurses' interventions should focus on identifying the adversities experienced by parents, so that actions can be taken that will improve the adaptation process, and consequently promote the parents' well-being in addition to their children's healing process. To this point, meeting family-centred care expectations is an additional paediatrics'
Following up the call for research projects launched by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) after the first pandemic event in Portugal, and bearing in mind the positive results obtained, during the summer of 2021, a new call was launched with a shorter duration.
During one month just before starting the university academic year, undergraduate students could join a research team in a research lab, and by applying a “learning by doing” approach, students experienced a research atmosphere and got involved with the main activities being developed by the research group. For engineering students, this is an opportunity to bring theory to practice, get experience, and ingress into research teamwork.
This paper presents and discusses the main achievements of this initiative, in particular, the research experience of three undergraduate students and their host research teams, from the Algoritmi center, from the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, Portugal. The students’ opinions on the developed projects were quite satisfactory and they recognized that joining this type of scholarship opens horizons, promotes an inquiring spirit, teaches research strategies and, above all, students can see their knowledge applied to engineering research and on the advancement of science.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
