Schwannoma of the tongue—A common tumour in a rare location: A case report

Abstract: Schwannoma is a benign tumour that arises from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath, and is a common tumour of the head and neck. However, intraoral location is very uncommon (only 1% of all head and neck schwannomas). We report a rare case of lingual schwannoma in a 20-year-old male patient who presented with a small, slow-growing mass over the right lateral border of the tongue with 1 year of evolution and that became recently ulcerated. The patient underwent MRI examination and complete surgical exci… Show more

“…3 Patients with large tumours (more than 3 cm) or tumours located on the posterior thirds of the tongue are more likely to be symptomatic. 10 The tumor can affect any part of the tongue; the tip of the tongue is the least affected part. 9 Intraoral schwannomas constitute about 1% of intraoral tumors; lingual schwannoma can affect all age groups with the peak incidence being between the third and the sixth decade and there is no gender predisposition.…”

“…Approximately 25% of all schwannomas occur in the head and neck. Intraoral schwannoma accounts for 1% of all head and neck schwannomas and commonly seen at the tongue (66% in anterior third of the tongue vs 34% in the posterior two thirds) followed by palate, floor of mouth, buccal mucosa, gingiva, lips and the vestibular mucosa in descending manner [37,38] .…”
