Most patients with Zellweger syndrome, neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy, infantile Refsum disease and hyperpipecolic acidemia are characterized by a deficiency of peroxisomes. We have developed a simple cytological method for the in situ detection of genetic complementation among and between these patients who are clinically and biochemically defined as having generalized peroxisomal dysfunction. This technique should facilitate both complementation studies in these disorders and investigations into the biogenesis of peroxisomes.

Intensive tillage operations, indiscriminate use of irrigation water, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides and crop biomass burning have made the conventional rice–wheat (RW) system highly energy-intensive and inefficient. In the recent past, portfolios of climate-smart agricultural practices (CSAP) have been promoted as a potential alternative to improve the energy efficiency in conventional RW system. Therefore, to evaluate the energy input–output relation, energy flow and economic efficiency in various combinations of crop management options, a 3-year (2014–2017) on-farm study was conducted at Karnal, India. Various portfolio of management practices; Sc1-Business as usual (BAU) or Conventional tillage (CT) without residue, Sc2-CT with residue, Sc3-Reduce tillage (RT) with residue + recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF), Sc4-RT/Zero tillage (ZT) with residue + RDF, Sc5-ZT with residue + RDF + GreenSeeker + Tensiometer, Sc6-Sc5 + Nutrient expert were investigated. Present study results revealed that net energy, energy use efficiency and energy productivity were 11–18, 31–51 and 29–53% higher under CSAP (mean of Sc4, Sc5 and Sc6) in RW system than Sc1, respectively. However, renewable and non-renewable energy inputs were 14 and 33% higher in Sc1 compared to CSAP (4028 and 49,547 MJ ha−1), respectively, it showed that BAU practices mostly dependents on non-renewable energy sources whereas CSAP dependents on renewable energy sources. Similarly, the adoption of CSAP improved the biomass yield, net farm income and economic efficiency by 6–9, 18–23 and 42–58%, respectively compared to Sc1. Overall, the adoption of CSAP could be a viable alternative for improving energy use efficiency, farm profitability and eco-efficiency in the RW system.

Purpose: The pressure on land for agricultural purposes is on the rise and sustainable agriculture remains the panacea for herdsmen attack on arable crop farmers in the study area. The present research empirically measured and identified the factors that influenced efficiency and Total Factor Productivity (TFP) of lowland paddy rice farmers in Kwara State of Nigeria. Research Methodology: The study made use of cross-sectional data collected from 200 active farmers during the 2016 cropping season via Multi-stage sampling technique. Instrument used to elicit information from the active farmers was structured questionnaire complemented with interview schedule and the collected data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings: The results proved that majority of the farmers were not smart farmers which is responsible for negative TFP in most of the Decision making units (DMUs) as evident from poor robust increase in output index. However, the study inferred that there remained more untapped potentials in paddy rice production in the studied area. Limitations: The scope of the research is limited to lowland rice farmers in Kwara State of Nigeria. Originality/Value: Therefore, it was recommended that Government and non-governmental organisations should formulate supportive policies targeting sustainability of rice production viz. proper allocation of farm resources and also welfare improvement of the resource poor farmers for cultivating rice crops in the studied area.

This research empirically determined the cost efficiency of the farmers that participated in the IFAD/VCD programme in Niger State of Nigeria. The study elicited cross-sectional data of the 2018 cropping season viz. wellstructured questionnaire complemented with interview schedule from a sample size of 110 respondents selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. The sampled data were analysed using the stochastic cost frontier model. The empirical evidence showed that none of the farmers was on the cost frontier surface i.e. inability to attain optimal minimum cost in the cultivation of rice in the studied area. The identified significant idiosyncratic variables militating against cost efficiency were the poor health status of the farm family which led to the extra cost incurred in labour substitution and diseconomies of scale due to their small-scale mode of operation. Therefore, the study recommends that the policymakers should sensitize the farmers on the importance of health preventive measures and should endeavour to improve on the existing basic health centres both in human capital and logistics. In addition, the farmers should be encouraged to explore cooperative marketing so as to take advantage of the bulk discount in input purchase and have bargaining power in the marketing of their output, thus tackling the problem of diseconomies of scale in their farm operations.

This paper presents a simulation model of economic development based on a synthesis of neoclassical and behavioral economic theory that, in addition to economic rationality, accounts for the realities of practice in the field and factory. The theory on which our model is based may best be described as an adaptive, multi-goal theory of decision-making incorporating suboptimization in response to market and behavioral feedback. Our central concern here is its empirical application to development economics: specifically, to the problem of tracking or simulating a regional farm economy during a period of stark disequilibrium involving a transition from traditional to modern agriculture.In Part I we describe the microeconomic theory in nontechnical terms. Its application to the green revolution of India's important Punjab region dominates the remainder of the paper. Part II summarizes the main features of the simulation model while Part III summarizes the evidence that the model works: that it produces a qualitative picture of development in close accord with the region's recent economic history.
