The reaction of 1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (TMTAC) with [La{Al(CH(3))(4)}(3)] resulted in C-H activation, leading to the formation of [(TMTAC)La{Al(CH(3))(4)}{(mu(3)-CH(2))[Al(CH(3))(2)(mu(2)-CH(3))](2)}] (1) containing a bis(aluminate) dianion and subsequent extrusion of methane. A similar reaction with [Y{Al(CH(3))(4)}(3)] led to the formation of CH(4), [TMTAC{Al(CH(3))(3)}(2)] (2) and {[(TMTAC)Y][Y(2)(mu(2)-CH(3))][{(mu(6)-C)[Al(mu(2)-CH(3))(2)(CH(3))](3)}{(mu(3)-CH(2))(mu(2)-CH(3))Al(CH(3))(2)}(2)] (3), containing a six-coordinate carbide ion and two [CH(2)Al(CH(3))(3)](2)(-) anions. Compound 3 is a product of multiple C-H activation. This reaction was monitored by in situ(1)H NMR spectroscopy. The analogous reaction with [Sm{Al(CH(3))(4)}(3)] led to the formation of 2, of [(TMTAC)Sm{(mu(2)-CH(3))(CH(3))(2)Al}(2){(mu(3)-CH(2))(2)Al(CH(3))(2)}(2)] (4), which contains a tris(aluminate) trianion, and [{(TMTAC)Sm}{Sm(2)(mu(2)-CH(3))}{(mu(6)-C)[Al(mu(2)-CH(3))(2)(CH(3))](3)}{(mu(3)-CH(2))(mu(2)-CH(3))Al(CH(3))(2)}(2)] (5), which is isostructural to 3. The products were characterised by elemental analyses (except 4, 5), 1 by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and compounds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 by X-ray crystallography. Quantumchemical calculations were undertaken to support the crystallographic data analysis and confirm the structure of 3 and to compare it with an analogous compound where the central six-coordinate carbon has been replaced by oxygen. The investigations point to a mechanism of sterically induced condensation of [Al(CH(3))(4)](-) groups in close proximity in the coordination spheres of the rare-earth metal atoms, which is dependent on the size of these metal atoms.
Without mercury or thallium: A new umpoled nucleophilic acylation reagent is formed in the direct deprotonation of 1,3,5‐trimethyl‐1,3,5‐triazacyclohexane with butyllithium. The carbanionic center is flanked by two amino groups, even though lithiation at this position is expected to be disfavored (see scheme).
The reaction of 2-lithio-1,3,5-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane with YCp(2)Cl leads to the formation of a donor-functionalised mono-anionic amide ligand, 1,3,5-trimethyl-2-(methylamidomethyl)-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane, bonded to the YCp(2) unit. The reaction involves a cleavage of the 1,3,5-triazacyclohexane ring and such a cleavage is also observed in the analogous reaction with (Me(3)C)(2)GaCl, where a MeN[double bond, length as m-dash]CH(-) fragment is formed. No such cleavage occurs in the reaction of the related dilithiated bicyclic bis(3-methyl-1,3-diazacyclohex-1-yl)methane with YCpCl(2).3thf, which affords a mixed lithium-yttrium organyl.
Reactions of the lithiated carbanion [(RLi)(2).(RH)] (R = MeN[CH(2)N(Me)](2)CH, 2,4,6-trimethyl-2,4,6-triazacyclohex-1-yl) with dialkylaluminium and -gallium chlorides lead to the corresponding dialkylaluminium and -gallium compounds (RAlMe(2))(2), (RAlEt(2))(2) and (RGaEt(2))(2). They were characterised by elemental analyses, NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C, (27)Al) and crystal structure determinations. In the solid state the aluminium and gallium compounds form dimers by intermolecular coordination between the metal acceptor and the nitrogen donor leading to six-membered M(2)C(2)N(2) rings in chair conformation. As a first test for the synthetic utility of [(RLi)(2).(RH)], nucleophilic aminomethylation of chlorotrimethylsilane was performed to give RSiMe(3). Further deprotonation of RSiMe(3) with tBuLi occurs at one of the methyl groups bound to the silicon atom leading to RMe(2)SiCH(2)Li. Reactions with dimethylaluminium and -gallium chlorides gave RMe(2)SiCH(2)AlMe(2) and RMe(2)SiCH(2)GaMe(2). The compounds were characterised by NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C, (29)Si, (27)Al), elemental analyses and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compounds are monomeric in the solid state with intramolecular M-N bonds (M = Al, Ga) leading to five-membered rings.
