Orta Çağ'a tarihlenen Bizans el yazmalarında görülen örgü kompozisyonları erken dönemlerden itibaren süsleme amacıyla kullanılmıştır. El yazmalarındaki örgü kompozisyonlarının biçimsel açıdan, çoğu zaman birbirini tekrar ettiği ya da birbirine çok benzediğini görmek mümkündür. Bu özellik, Bizans sanatının özgün karakterini yansıtmaktadır. Burada, Bizans sanatında sıklıkla kullanılan örgü kompozisyonlarının minyatürlü el yazmalarındaki örnekleri ele alınmıştır. Bazı örnekler, üst marjda yer alır, bir metnin giriş sayfasını süsler ve bir geometrik formun etrafında birbirini tekrar ederek diyagonal örgüler oluşturan karmaşık kompozisyonlar meydana getirir. Bazı örnekler ise farklı konuları içeren metinler arasında bir ayraç görevi görür ve ikili ya da üçlü örgülerden oluşan basit ve tipik kompozisyonlar olarak karşımıza çıkar. Bazı örgü motiflerinin bitkisel motiflerle kombinasyon oluşturduğu örnekler de vardır. Araştırmamızda örgü motifleri kategorize edilmektedir. Ele alınan örnekler 11. yüzyıl-15. yüzyıl arasında kaleme alınan el yazmalarındaki örgü kompozisyonlarından oluşmaktadır.
Öz-Bu çalışmada Selanik kentinin koruyucu azizi, Aziz Demetrios'un, Bizans hagiografik yazını eşliğinde yaşam öyküsü, mucizeleri, kültü ve tasvirleri ele alınmıştır. Aziz Demetrios Bizans dini yazınında en erken 7. yüzyılda Selanik başpiskoposu Ioannes tarafından yazılan "Aziz Demetrios'un Mucizeleri"nde karşımıza çıkar. Ancak azizin biyografisine dair 9. yüzyıla kadar bilgi yoktur. 9. yüzyıldan itibaren Demetrios'un yaşam öyküsünün üç versiyonu ortaya çıkar.Aziz Demetrios, geleneksel anlatıya göre Selanikli ve senatör sınıfına mensup bir ailenin oğludur. 4. yüzyılın başlarında Roma imparatoru Maksimianus'un emriyle öldürülür. 6. yüzyılda kentin valisi Leontios'un amansız hastalığından mucizevî olarak kurtuluşunu Aziz Demetrios'a atfetmesi sonrasında, Demetrios'un bedeninin gömülü olduğu kabul edilen yere, Leontios'un girişimiyle bir kilise inşa edilir. Yapı 603'ten sonra/649'dan önce, bölgede meydana gelen bir deprem sonrasında yangın geçirir. Ardından orijinal plan şeması korunarak II. Iustinianos'un 688/689 yılları civarındaki kenti ziyareti sırasında yeniden inşa edilir. Yapının ilk evresi, yazılı kaynaklar ve arkeolojik kanıtlara göre 6. yüzyılın başlarını işaret etmektedir.Aziz Demetrios Bizans dönemindeki tasvirlerinde sivil ve asker olmak üzere iki temel tipte temsil edilmiştir. Azizin tasvirleri anıtsal duvar mozaikleri ve resimlerinde, rölyeflerde, ikonalarda, el yazmalarında, sikkelerde, mühürlerde, koutrouvialarda (hacı matarası), enkolpionlarda ve geç dönemde sırlı seramikler üzerinde yer alır. Aziz Demetrios 11. yüzyıldan itibaren, yaygın olarak, asker aziz olarak betimlenmiştir.
Bizans İmparatorluğu"nun başkenti Konstantinopolis"in 1204"te Latinler tarafından işgali, devletin yeni bir merkezden idare edilmesi zorunluluğunu doğurmuştu. Bu merkezlerden biri olan Trabzon"da, Komnenos hanedanlığından Aleksios ve David tarafından yeni bir devletin temeli atıldı. Kentte 13. yüzyılda süren imar faaliyetinde duvar resimleri, taş süslemeler ve yer mozaikleriyle zengin dekorasyona sahip birkaç kilise inşa edildi. Bu yapılar ve dekorasyonları Konstantinopolis"in mimari ve sanatsal üslubunun devamıdır. Trabzon yapılarının döşemelerinde, başkent ve başkent etkisini yansıtan yapılarda benzerlerini gördüğümüz geometrik kompozisyonlar yer alır. Bu bağlamda, Ayasofya Kilisesi"nin döşemeleri başkent üslubunu yansıtan iyi bir örnektir. Döşeme kilisenin naosunda, ana kubbeyi taşıyan dört sütun arasındaki 6.20 metrekarelik bölümde yer alır. Döşemenin merkezinde daire biçimli bir omphalion bulunmaktaydı. Levha 1860"larda yerinden sökülerek bir süre Kromni"deki Meryem"in Doğumu Kilisesi"nde tutulmuştu. 1924"te Karadeniz bölgesinden ayrılan Rumlar tarafından omphalion Selanik"e götürüldü. Aziz Georgios Rotondu"nun arkeolojik koleksiyonunda korunan eser, sonradan bugünkü yerine, Selanik"teki Bizans Kültürü Müzesi"ne taşındı. Bu çalışmanın amacı omphalionun kayıp olmayıp, yerinden söküldüğünü bilim dünyasına duyurmak ve Bizans yer döşemelerinde benzerini başka yerde görmediğimiz, omphaliondaki "tavşan avlayan kartal" tasvirinin ikonografisi ve köken sorununu ele almaktır. Bu bağlamda çalışmamızda, Antik Çağdan ve Bizans Dönemi"nden farklı eser gruplarındaki kartal, avcı kartal konulu paralel tasvirler yardımıyla genel bir değerlendirme yapılmıştır.
Bizans İmparatorluğu Orta Çağ'ın dinî, siyasal, kültürel ve sanatsal ortamına yön vermiş en önemli devletlerden biridir. İmparatorluğun ortaya çıkışından yıkılışına değin, binlerce eser kaleme alınmış ve kopya edilmiştir. Sanat tarihi çalışmalarında el yazmaları incelemeleri önemli bir yer tutsa da günümüze değin Bizans eserleri üzerine terminolojik bir sözlük oluşturulmamıştır. Bazı Türkçe çalışmalarda Bizans Sanatı'yla ilişkili kimi Antik Yunanca ve Latince terimlere rastlanır; ancak terimlerin Türkçe karşılığı bulunmamaktadır. Bizans el yazmaları ile ilişkili terimlerin birçoğunun da Türkçesi yoktur. Bu durumun temel nedeni, el yazmalarıyla ilişkili terimlerin, akademik çalışmalar dışında, kullanımına ihtiyaç duyulmamış olmasıyla açıklanabilir.El yazmaları birkaç yönden incelenir. Kodikolojik inceleme el yazmalarının malzeme ve teknik özellikleri, ölçüleri, kitabın formu, fasikül/tomarlar, dikişler, kapak özellikleri gibi kitapların somut yönüne dayanır. Paleografik incelemeler eserlerin metnindeki harflerin biçimleri, yazı karakteri, el yazısının karakteristik özellikleri, büyük ve küçük harflerin formları, satır ve sütun düzeni, başlık, kısaltma, ayraç, işaretçi gibi metin ve sayfa düzeniyle ilişkili yönlere odaklanır. İkonografik incelemeler ise el yazmalarının resimlerini baz alır. İkonografi metin-resim arasında kurulan ilişkiyi temel alarak, resimlerin konu seçkisini, kökenini, sanatsal üslubunu, resimlerdeki oran-orantı, perspektif gibi unsurları ele alarak yorumlamaktadır.Bu çalışmada Orta Çağ ve spesifik olarak Bizans el yazmalarına ilişkin kodikolojik ve paleografik terimlere, bu terimlerin uluslararası kataloglama ve envanter sistemlerindeki kısaltmalarına ve genel anlamda el yazmaları ile ilişkili akademik literatürdeki terminoloji sorununa değinilmektedir.
