The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of "RAP" [RAP is a three-step strategy: Read-Ask-Put], a paraphrasing cognitive strategy training, associated with a self-regulatory model, on the development of reading comprehension among fourth-grade students. All participants were selected on the basis of initial reading comprehension measures and consisted of three male students who were identified as being at a frustration-level reading. A multiple-probe design across participants was used. As a result, the participants showed significant improvements in the text recall and an enhancement their reading comprehension skills. Two of the participants were able to maintain their improvements and generalized each step of the strategy in the "RAP" to different content-area texts. The remaining participant made remarkable improvements with respect to the baseline phase, but did not maintain and generalize the strategy. Suggestions were made for improving future research investigating the effects of RAP paraphrasing strategy.

In this research, an experimental study was carried out in social studies 4 th grade students' to develop students' conceptual achievement and motivation to succeed academically. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of project-based learning (PBL) in social studies. A quasi-experimental research design (pre-and posttest) was used in the research. While the experimental group of students received an interactive social studies instruction including completely PBL in a team format activities, the control group students received an instruction including direct instruction method (whole class teaching and individual work in the worksheet of the topics) in the fourth 4 th grade social studies curriculum for six weeks. The findings indicated a statistically significant difference in favor of the experimental group on the concept achievement and motivation. Students who participated in the PBL environments not only enriched and expanded their knowledge but also achieved a higher level of motivation than the control group. The PBL in a team format activities were provided to promote the experimental group students' motivation to succeed academically and to develop their conceptual achievement. The results demonstrated that the PBL improved students' understanding regarding social studies concepts and helped them achieve the behaviours which were aimed academically. The experimental group's intended behaviours in academic motivation at the beginning of the experimental treatment turned into performed behaviours at the end.

Bu çalışmada, okuduğunu anlama becerilerinin gelişimi için ana fikir belirleme becerisi ile ilgili verilen doğrudan öğretimin okuduğunu anlamada güçlük çeken üç dördüncü sınıf öğrencisi üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Araştırmada, yoklama evreli denekler arası çoklu yoklama deseni kullanılmış ve elde edilen veriler grafiksel analiz yoluyla analiz edilmiştir. Katılımcıların öğretim oturumlarında ve toplu yoklamalarda okuduğunu anlama performansı öyküleyici metinlerden oluşan kısa cevaplı sorular aracılığıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Ana fikir ve ayrıntı belirleme becerilerinin kalıcılığı ise öğretim uygulaması sonunda üçüncü ve beşinci haftalarda incelenmiştir. Ayrıca çalışmada, uygulanan programın etkilerinin niteliksel boyutlarını değerlendirmek amacıyla sosyal geçerlik verilerine yer verilmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, ana fikir belirleme becerisi üzerine yapılan öğretimin ana fikir ve ayrıntıları belirleme becerilerini öğrenme ve öğrenilen becerilerin kalıcılığını sürdürme konusunda her üç katılımcıya katkı sağladığını ve başlama düzeyi evresine kıyasla daha yüksek düzeyde bir okuduğunu anlama performansı elde edildiğini göstermiştir. Tüm sonuçlar, okuduğunu anlama becerilerinin geliştirilmesinde doğrudan öğretim modeli kullanılarak yapılan ana fikir belirleme becerisi öğretiminin katılımcı öğrenciler için etkili bir yöntem olduğunu göstermiştir. Bu çalışmada, sosyal bilgiler dersinde bağlam temelli kelime öğretiminin farklılaşan okuma becerilerindeki yedinci sınıf öğrencilerinin okuduğunu anlama performansları üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Katılımcıların okuduğunu anlama becerilerini belirlemek için 16 maddeden oluşan "Cümle Doğrulama Tekniği" testi kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca bağlam temelli kelime öğretimi uygulamasına ilişkin katılımcıların görüş ve deneyimlerini ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşmelere başvurulmuştur. Bağlam temelli eğitim grubu öğrencileri sekiz hafta boyunca 10 oturumda açıklayıcı (bilgilendirici) sosyal bilgiler metinleri aracılığıyla bağlamdan kelime öğrenme eğitimini alırken; kontrol grubu öğrencileri geniş okuma programına dâhil olmuştur. Elde edilen sonuçlar, bu çalışmada iki bulguyu ortaya çıkarmıştır: Birincisi, öğrencilere kelime anlamlarını bağlamdan nasıl çıkarılacağını öğretmenin onların okuduğunu anlama performanslarını önemli ölçüde geliştirdiğini göstermiştir. İkincisi nitel bulgular, zayıf okuyucuların eğitim yoluyla bilinmeyen kelimelerin anlamlarının karmaşıklığını bağlamdan çözebileceğini ve okuma engelleriyle baş etmek için okuma sırasında ihtiyaç duyulan bilişsel stratejileri kullanabileceğini göstermiştir. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of explicit instruction in notetaking skills on the notetaking performance of seventh-grade students at different reading ability levels. The students in the notetaking instruction condition (NTI) received classroom-based notetaking skills instruction (approximately 40 minutes) every week for 10 weeks. The comparison condition students (CNT) were asked to use conventional notetaking (CNT) that was embedded within the daily social studies lessons. The participants' reading comprehension abilities were identified through the Sentence Verification Technique, which consisted of a 16-item expository text. A notetaking performance test (NTPT) was used to assess the effect of notetaking skills instruction on two dimensions of the participants' notes (verbatim copying and terse value). The results demonstrated that the terse value of students' notes in the NTI condition was significantly better than that of the students in the CNT condition. The students in the NTI condition reduced their percentage of verbatim copying and used fewer words to cover more main concepts in the NTPT that followed the instructional intervention. Surprisingly, the students at low reading ability showed the greatest gains in notetaking performance from verbatim copying to terse notetaking. C 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
