Abstract The 1980s brought an alternative view to the positivist predominant current in consumer research field: Consumer Culture Theory (CCT), which assumes an epistemological orientation based on interpretivism and qualitative research. Given the prominence achieved by CCT it's raised the follow question: Consumer Culture Theory can be considered an autonomous marketing school of thought? Guided by three fundamental criteria for qualifying a school of thought (academic recognition, body of knowledge and contributions), a desk research was conducted, based on journals and papers in the field and in a research corpus built from the references included in the seminal text Consumer Culture Theory (CCT): Twenty Years of Research. Conclusion is that CCT meets the criteria adopted in this research and, thus, can be considered an autonomous marketing school of thought within the field of consumer research. The 1980s brought an alternative view to this thinking: Consumer Culture Theory (CCT). This perspective assumes a different epistemological orientation from that of the predominant one, based on interpretivism and qualitative research, treating consumption as a cultural phenomenon. The increasing international spread of CCT prompted the study described in this article, to examine whether CCT is consolidated in Brazil. For this, desk research was carried out, using a corpus based on papers published in the area of marketing over the past ten years, by the Marketing Division of the Meeting of the National Association of Postgraduate and Research Programs in Business Administration (EnANPAD) and the ANPAD Marketing Meeting (EMA). The results point to a growing development of studies and research centers related to CCT, revealing that this perspective is currently in the process of being established in Brazil. AbstractI n today's market, guided by symbolic consumption, brands are channels of self--expression for the identity construction and have a transformative role in society, once they produce and consume meanings located between the culturally constructed world and the consumer. The brand is built collectively by the action of various agents, including advertising, that has in the myth a valuable source for the production of meaning. Based on Barthesian semiology, this interpretive qualitative study sought to answer how the myth played in advertising operates the meaning of Movimento, a brand with symbolic appeal. The research corpus analysis, consisting of print advertising ads, revealed the presence of eight myths that, together, suggest an association between the brand and the metanarrative of sensuality. In the text, we discuss the theoretical reflections on this finding and the implications for marketing academy and practice, as well as directions for future research.
The symbolic character became decisive for current consumption. In this phenomenon, becomes important the role of agents such as advertising, which prominently calls for the symbolism of myths played in their messages, usually built on intertextuality that appropriates and modifies meanings imported from various languages, among them the Cinema. This feature appears clearly in a campaign of Chilli Beans, inspired in pornochanchada. Through barthesian semiology, this paper endeavors to answer how the brand Chilli Beans, through intertextuality, brought to its advertising the myths played in pornochanchada? The results show eroticism as the great mythological narrative in this marriage between advertising and Cinema.
