Abstract Inluence of water of the Rio Pará estuary on soil fertility of várzea islands in Belém, Pará. The ParáRiver is an immense estuary formed by numerous rivers and bays, composing a large body of fresh water that lows into the ocean. In this environment, there are many islands, of which 39 belong to the city of Belém. These Revista Biotemas, 31 (4), dezembro de 2018 16 S. Brazão e Silva et al.islands have a small percentage of terra irma, including areas cultivated by family farmers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the water movement of the Pará River estuary on soil fertility of islands of Belém, Pará. Sampling was carried out on 23 islands in a várzea ecosystem with an area greater than 10 ha, including three signiicantly large islands (Mosqueiro, Caratateua and Cotijuba) and three islands (Mutum, Santa Rosa and João Pilatos) that belong to the municipality of Ananindeua, located south of Mosqueiro. The samples were collected in a riverine environment, surrounding the islands, with the goal of better understanding the areas used by the local population. The study indicates that there is variability in the soil fertility of insular environments of Belém, including a signiicant difference between the archipelagos evaluated for calcium (Ca +2 ), magnesium (Mg +2 ), potassium (K + ) and aluminum (A +3 ), as well as the sum of bases (SB) and cation exchange capacity (CTC). No signiicant difference was observed for the values of available phosphorus (P). A gradient in the south-north direction was also observed for the elements K + , Mg +2 and Al +3 .
The use of cassava root silage for animal feeding is a suitable option for farmers who grow cassava as an alternative product and for cattle ranchers who have to deal with high prices of corn. Our objective was to determine the effects of cassava genotypes and the correction of soil acidity on the microbial population, fermentation characteristics, chemical composition, aerobic stability and losses of cassava root silage. We used a 2 × 3 factorial design in completely randomized blocks, with four replications. We evaluated two cassava genotypes (Caeté and Manteiguinha) and three methods of soil acidity correction (lime, gypsum, and lime+gypsum). The roots were harvested 11 months after planting, ensiled in PVC silos, and stored for 45 days. No interaction was observed between genotypes and soil acidity correction for any of the evaluated parameters. The silage of Caeté genotype showed the highest concentration of dry matter (421 g kg-1 fresh matter) and non-fibrous carbohydrates (893 g kg-1 dry matter), and the lowest concentrations of neutral detergent fiber (37.1 g kg-1 dry matter) . No significant differences were observed among treatments for lactic acid bacteria, yeast and mold counts in silages. Both genotypes resulted in silages with an adequate fermentation profile and considerably high aerobic stability, but with high effluent loss. The Caeté genotype showed to be potentially better for silage production due to its higher dry matter recovery. Due to the high level of effluent loss, it is recommended to test the effect of a moisture-absorbing additive during the ensiling process of these cassava roots.
The cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] represents an important source of income and employment in the northeastern region of Para, also being a valuable source of protein in the diet, especially for the rural population. However, the productivity is low, mainly due to the low fertility of the soils used in the region for the cultivation of this plant. In this context, the correction of the factors responsible for the soil limitations that lead to nutrient deficiency, by means of lime, is of great practical importance for obtaining greater yields of crops grown in acidic soils. The objective was to evaluate the effects of five doses of lime in the production of cowpea beans, BR3-Tracuateua and BR2-Bragança cultivars and chemical attributes of a dystrophic oxisoil, at Tracuateua city. The study was a randomized block designed experimental in a factorial (5 × 2) with four replications. The terms of the factorial refer to five doses of limestone and two cowpea cultivars. Liming increased pH and concentrations of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium, reducing the Al concentration and saturation. Lime dosages did not provide significant increases in grain production. The cultivar BR3-Tracuateua was more efficient in all liming levels, producing more than 30% of grain than the BR-2 Bragança.
