Maruja Bardasano (Madrid, 1935) es una de las artistas más polifacéticas y brillantes del exilio republicano español establecido en Mexico al finalizar la Guerra Civil en 1939. Hija de los pintores José Bardasano y Juana Francisca Rubio, con quienes llegó a bordo of the Sinaia, se formó tanto en artes plásticas como en ballet clásico. Durante los primeros años de la década de los años cincuenta formó parte, entre otras compañías, del Ballet Concierto de Sergio Unger, en la cual llegó a ser primera solista y donde desarrolló puntualmente la escenografía. Paralelamente, se convirtió en una brillante pintora que expuso en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de México. En 1956 retornó a España, donde se dedicó por completo a la pintura, actividad que continúa desarrollando en la actualidad. En este artículo se analizan las aportaciones más destacadas de esta artista, poniendo especial atención a su faceta de bailarina en el exilio en México.
Nacidas con pocos años de diferencia, Victorina Durán y Maruja Mallo estudiaron en la Escuela Especial de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado, se movieron por el Madrid más moderno, fueron docentes de la Residencia de Señoritas y se dedicaron a las artes plásticas y la escenografía. Con el estallido de la Guerra Civil, ambas se exiliaron a Buenos Aires y trabajaron para Margarita Xirgu, participaron de las Bienales Hispanoamericanas de Arte y expusieron en la Galería Silvagni en París. En Argentina las dos residieron y trabajaron activamente más de dos décadas, antes de retornar a Madrid. Pero, si bien Mallo fue recuperada por el panorama más avanzado de la Movida Madrileña como icono mitificado de aquella cultura prebélica, Durán continuó trabajando en un discreto segundo plano. Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar los puntos en común en sus trayectorias formativas y profesionales y deducir por qué ambas creadoras nunca colaboraron y apenas se mencionaron en sus escritos.
Muchos son los esfuerzos que desde hace tiempo se vienen produciendo por concederle a las mujeres el lugar que le corresponde en el arte. Sin embargo, menos se ha atendido a la función de estas en el arte decorativo, una rama a veces marginal en la historiografía —especialmente la del siglo XX—, al igual que a las artistas que lo han cultivado. En 1899 nacían Victorina Durán y Matilde Calvo Rodero, dos creadoras que se formaron, trabajaron y expusieron juntas. Se trata de uno de los escasos ejemplos hasta ahora documentados de amistad, colaboración y a veces autoría creativa compartida entre mujeres artistas de su época, que ilustra el cambio que encarnó toda una generación moderna que dignificaría las técnicas y obras de las artes decorativas. Con todo, siguen siendo unas grandes desconocidas. Este estudio tiene como objetivo estudiar las trayectorias y circunstancias de estas artistas, subrayando su aprendizaje y orientaciones estéticas, y analizando su producción artística, así como su actividad docente. Mediante la puesta en valor de las modernas aportaciones de ambas, pretendemos contribuir a la incorporación de su obra y la reivindicación de sus soportes y formatos en los relatos de nuestra historia cultural reciente.
Pilar Calvo Rodero (1910-1974) representa dos aspectos —en gran parte ignorados por la historiografía tradicional— de la producción artística española durante el franquismo: el arte realizado por mujeres, y la producción en medios no pictóricos como la escultura, el figurinismo y la escenografía. A través de un empeño creativo orientado hacia la tridimensionalidad, esta artista creó en torno a sí un imaginario personal rico en técnicas y matices. Apoyado en el estudio de documentación inédita en instituciones públicas, colecciones particulares y el archivo familiar, este artículo analiza la compleja trayectoria de Pilar Calvo Rodero para poner de relieve sus contribuciones en el contexto de la producción cultural femenina durante el franquismo, entre lo escultórico y lo escénico.
