The purpose of this study was to obtain information about the influence of successive dilutions and succussions on the water structure. 'Extremely diluted solutions' (EDS) are solutions obtained through the iteration of two processes: dilution in stages of 1:100 and succussion, typically used in homeopathic medicine. The iteration is repeated until extreme dilutions are reached, so that the chemical composition of the solution is identical to that of the solvent. Nine different preparations, were studied from the 3cH to 30cH (Hahnemannian Centesimal Dilution). Four of those were without the active principle (potentized water). Two different active principles were used: Arsenicum sulphuratum rubrum (ASR), As4S4, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4D). The solvents were: a solution of sodium bicarbonate and of silicic acid at 5 x 10(-5) M (mol/l) each, and solutions of sodium bicarbonate 5 x 10(-5), 7.5 x 10(-5) and 10 x 10(-5) M (mol/l) in double-distilled water. The containers were Pyrex glass to avoid the release of alkaline oxide and silica from the walls. Conductivity measurements of the solutions were carried out as a function of the age of the potencies. We found increases of electrical conductivity compared to untreated solvent. Successive dilution and succussion can permanently alter the physico-chemical properties of the aqueous solvent. But we also detected changes in physio-chemical parameters with time. This has not previously been reported. The modification of the solvent could provide an important support to the validity of homeopathic medicine, that employs 'medicines without molecules'. The nature of the phenomena here described remains still unexplained, nevertheless some significant experimental results were obtained.

The aim of this work is to compare the physicochemical properties of three oligonucleotidic sequences, d(TGGGT), d(TGGGGT) and d(TGGGGGT), which assemble to form quadruplex structures with the same molecularity, but containing three, four, and five G-quartets, respectively. The addition of one or two G-tetrads greatly increases both the enthalpy and Tm values of the quadruplex dissociation.

A physico-chemical characterization, based on NMR and CD spectroscopy, of quadruplexes formed by the oligonucleotide d(TGGGT), where two or three Gs are substituted by 8-bromo-2'-deoxyguanosine residues (dGBr), is reported. The oligonucleotidic sequences d(TGBr GBr GT), d(TGBr GGBr T), d(TGGBr GBr T), and d(TGBr GBr GBr T) have been synthesized. Only sequences d(TGBr GGBr T) and d(TGBr GBr GT) were able to fold into a well defined quadruplex structure, and their CD profiles and thermal stabilities turned out to be very different from those observed for the natural counterpart, indicating that the 8-Br-dG residues dramatically affect the structure of the quadruplex.

The major route of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) to humans is the intake through food. They enter the food chain principally by plants uptake from the soil and, to a less extent, through foliar deposition. The soil‐to‐plant transfer as part of the biogeochemical cycle of these elements is a complex and hardly predictable process. In this study, we investigated the capability of soils and plants to indicate PTEs inputs in an intermingled urban‐rural landscape of south Italy affected by legal and illegal waste disposal and dumping. For this aim, 172 agricultural soil and plant (edible part) samples were collected in pairs from 47 municipalities and analyzed for 12 PTEs (As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Se, Tl, V, Zn). Soil extractions with 1 M NH4NO3 and 0.05 M EDTA pH 7 were applied to assess PTEs bioavailability. Results were examined according to plant species and main soil chemical properties. For Pb and Cd, the soil‐to‐plant transfer factors (TF) and the corresponding soil benchmark concentrations were also investigated. Zinc, Cu, Cd, and Pb were the only PTEs of anthropic origin severely polluting from 10 to 16% of the soils, but only in a very few cases exceeded physiological or EU legal critical values in the edible part of the plants. An evaluation of human risk due to the ingestion of these elements was tried; no risk for consumers for Zn, Cu, and Pb, while for Cd three values slightly exceeded the tolerable daily intake. Therefore, we conclude that crops cultivated in the studied area could represent only a moderate risk for human health. No correlation was found between soil and plant data, which likely highlights different pollution inputs. A large variability characterized the Pb and Cd TF, making it difficult to establish a unique benchmark concentration for the studied agricultural soils.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and circular dichroism (CD) techniques were used to investigate the physico-chemical properties of the quadruplexes formed by the two different truncations of human telomeric sequence d(TAGGGT) and d(AGGGT), where the adenines were substituted by 2'-deoxy-8-(hydroxyl)adenosine (A --> A OH). CD spectra show that the modified sequences are able to form parallel-stranded quadruplex structure. Analysis of the thermodynamic parameters reveals that the introduction of the modified adenine affects in different way the thermal stability of the [d(TAGGGT)]4 and [d(AGGGT)]4 quadruplexes.
