Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA's H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy's foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun-Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years.

[1] HF radar observations, 630.0 nm cusp auroral emission, and an ionospheric tomography scan are compared to investigate the mechanism by which radar cusp echoes are generated. A collocation is reported between the equatorward boundaries of broad spectral width HF radar backscatter and 630.0 nm cusp auroral precipitation. In addition, the radio tomographic image reveals spatial structures in ionospheric electron density that map closely to the precipitation. However, the large-scale horizontal gradient appears to be insufficiently steep to account alone for the rapid growth of irregularities by the gradient drift mechanism. It is proposed that the initial source of the decameter-scale features responsible for the backscatter may result from fine structure within the precipitation itself, or alternatively, from the cascade down of unstable intermediate-scale gradients created in the plasma convecting poleward from the source region. The latter process may explain the ongoing backscatter found poleward of the auroral band.

Abstract. The work describes experimental observations of enhancements in the electron density of the ionospheric F-region created by cusp/cleft particle precipitation at the dayside entry to the polar-cap convection¯ow. Measurements by meridian scanning photometer and all-sky camera of optical red-line emissions from aurora are used to identify latitudinally narrow bands of soft-particle precipitation responsible for structured enhancements in electron density determined from images obtained by radio tomography. Two examples are discussed in which the electron density features with size scales and magnitudes commensurate with those of patches are shown to be formed by precipitation at the entry region to the anti-sunward ow. In one case the spectrum of the incoming particles results in ionisation being created, for the most part below 250 km, so that the patch will persist only for minutes after convecting away from the auroral source region. However in a second example, at a time when the plasma density of the solar wind was particularly high, a substantial part of the particle-induced enhancement formed above 250 km. It is suggested that, with the reduced recombination loss in the upper F-region, this structure will retain form as a patch during passage in the anti-sunward¯ow across the polar cap.

Abstract. Troughs in the latitudinal distribution of electron density are a well-known feature of the ionosphere from subauroral to polar latitudes. The location and depth of the trough minimum, the width of the feature, and the horizontal gradients in electron density associated with the trough walls are all quantities of interest or concern to practical applications of radio systems involving the ionosphere. In practice, the precise characteristics of trough-like structures have been difficult to monitor using ground-based methods. Ionospheric tomography represents a new development that is maturing into a technique ideally suited to the study of electron density troughs. Results are presented from a variety of observations made during tomographic campaigns in northern Europe. A long-term investigation has been made of the main trough from a network of stations in the United Kingdom. The position of the trough minimum and the wall gradients have been studied on a diurnal basis using tomographic images reconstructed from measurements for a succession of passes of Navy Navigation Satellite System satellites. With stations deployed for more than 6 months, the average behavior has also been studied. Examples are shown of extreme behavior of the trough under very disturbed geomagnetic conditions, during which tomography continues to yield images while the limitations of ionosondes are exposed. Studies of narrow troughs with very steep gradients seen at auroral latitudes have been used to investigate some of the successes and limitations of the tomographic method. Measurements made in the polar cap show the depleted densities of the polar hole in the center of the dawn convection cell and illustrate the power of the tomographic method at high latitudes. Finally, the dayside trough at the high-latitude boundary between corotating and counterstreaming flux tubes in the afternoon sector has been revealed in a tomographic image extending over some 30 ø latitude, made using a chain of six stations in Scandinavia.

Tomographic imaging of the ionosphere is a recently developed technique that uses integrated measurements and computer reconstructions to determine electron densities. The integral of electron density along vertical or oblique paths is obtained with radio transmissions from low-earth-orbiting (LEO) satellite transmitters to a chain of receivers on the earth’s surface. Similar measurements along horizontal paths can be made using transmissions from Global Position System (GPS) navigation satellites to GPS receivers on LEO spacecraft. Also, the intensities of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emissions can be measured with orbiting spectrometers. These intensities are directly related to the integral of the oxygen ion and electron densities along the instrument line of sight. Two-dimensional maps of the ionospheric plasma are produced by analyzing the combined radio and EUV data using computerized ionospheric tomography (CIT). Difficulties associated with CIT arise from the nonuniqueness of the reconstructions, owing to limited angle measurements or nonoptimal receiver location. Improvements in both reconstruction algorithms and CIT measurement systems are being implemented to overcome these difficulties. New imaging systems being developed employ CIT for large area mapping of the plasma densities in the ionosphere.

We have developed a passive 350 GHz (850 μm) video-camera to demonstrate lumped element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs)--designed originally for far-infrared astronomy--as an option for general purpose terrestrial terahertz imaging applications. The camera currently operates at a quasi-video frame rate of 2 Hz with a noise equivalent temperature difference per frame of ∼0.1 K, which is close to the background limit. The 152 element superconducting LEKID array is fabricated from a simple 40 nm aluminum film on a silicon dielectric substrate and is read out through a single microwave feedline with a cryogenic low noise amplifier and room temperature frequency domain multiplexing electronics.

SCUBA-2 is an innovative 10,000 pixel submillimeter camera due to be delivered to the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in late 2006. The camera is expected to revolutionize submillimeter astronomy in terms of the ability to carry out widefield surveys to unprecedented depths addressing key questions relating to the origins of galaxies, stars and planets. This paper presents an update on the project with particular emphasis on the laboratory commissioning of the instrument. The assembly and integration will be described as well as the measured thermal performance of the instrument. A summary of the performance results will be presented from the TES bolometer arrays, which come complete with in-focal plane SQUID amplifiers and multiplexed readouts, and are cooled to 100mK by a liquid cryogen-free dilution refrigerator. Considerable emphasis has also been placed on the operating modes of the instrument and the "common-user" aspect of the user interface and data reduction pipeline. These areas will also be described in the paper.
