Summary An attempt was made to induce scrapie in local crossbred sheep. The inoculum used consisted of brain suspension from a diseased sheep of the Suffolk breed that had naturally contracted scrapie. Ten sheep from two crossbreds were infected intracerebrally, two via the conjunctiva, and ten were exposed to contact infection. Some of the infected animals died intercurrently, showing no clinical symptoms of scrapie but having typical histological alterations. A total of 7 sheep showed clinical symptoms of the disease between the 15th and 23rd month following infection. The cerebrum and the spinal cord showed dystrophic and necrobiotic changes such as chromatolysis, vacuolation, sclerosis, pycnosis and rhexis. Sheep slaughtered at the 27th month without any visible signs of scrapie also showed typical dystrophic lesions. It is suggested that the pathological process proceeds from a subclinical form without symptoms to intercurrent death or to a form presenting a characteristic clinical picture.
