General conditions and apparatus for applying coatings of the refractory metals, carbides, nitrides, borides, silicides, and oxides by vapor‐phase deposition are described. This process consists essentially of reducing, reacting, or decomposing a volatile compound of the coating material at a heated surface. Thick, adherent deposits have been obtained on a variety of bases, both metallic and nonmetallic. A few of the properties of the deposits are described, along with their limitations and potential uses as protective coatings for high‐temperature service.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
